Folks, this one aint going anywhere anytime soon so no need to try and kill it. Its been sitting in comittee since Feb and no actions logged since then. That means its dying a slow death already. You can check on thomas...just plug in hr 308, select bill number and away ya go. Some of the gun groups keep stirring the pot on these to just well keep stirring the pot. We might better spend our time spinning up for the 2012 elections. We'll know if this rears its ugly head.

I just got an update letter from Gun Owners of America regarding McCarthy and her BS Bill about private sales and other Draconian nonsense, saying it is making headway to the floor,,.,THe Senate also has a similar bill sponsored by the diddler himself,, Chuckie ( Larger Butthole)Schumer .. McCarthy has 35 Co Sponsors and although I hope it never sees the light of day I will not take my attention away from the gun grabbing hyprocrites in either House for any reason //////

From the GOA Website,, This is the Bill that GOA is taking aim at.

H.R. 1781
(McCarthy and 35 others):

This bill would:

•withhold federal crime-fighting funds from states which fail to provide a sufficient number of names to the FBI’s Instant Check system (with penalties possible for states that fall as little as 10% short of providing all names) [sec. 101];
•require federal agencies to turn over the names of all prohibited persons (which would presumably include the names of all persons admitting to having smoked as little as one marijuana cigarette) [sec. 102];
•redefine “adjudicated as a mental defective” (18 U.S.C. 922(g)(4)) to impose a gun ban in any case in which a “lawful authority” (including, presumably, a school or a Medicare-funded doctor) prescribes counseling or medication in response to “subnormal intelligence, mental illness, or incompetency” [sec. 103];
•require colleges to set up a procedure for investigating students who are acting strange and “reporting” them [sec. 103];
•ban all private person-to-person sales of firearms, requiring that all sales go through federal firearms licensees or the police, who would conduct a background check [Title II].

In five words,,,The old broad is nuts.>

Rather than merely believing what a pro-gun organization says why not jump on thomas and see for yourself...there are 2 bills - one in the house and one in the senate...neither has had ANY action whatsoever since they were introduced...both were referred to committees - one in Feb and the other in Jan I believe....and both are still sitting right there in those committees...a quick look on thomas shows that there has been no action of any kind on either one since then...they are both dying on the vine...yes they have lots of co-sponsors but there they sit idle...

Gun related stuff? There's a gun section on this board? Cool, I love guns... :hysterical:

Yeah, you're right Spence, but this one is DOA right now and I think some of the gun groups are beating it when they dont have too. The thing to do is watch Gabrielle Giffords or rather her democratic buddies in congress when she returns. I dont think she will do anything but I think there might be another flurry when she takes her seat again. Congress isnt doing anything right now except beating each other over spending cuts and/or tax er uh revenue increases.

IMHO if we want to jump into this fight the way to do it is start asking congress to use their "influence" on the courts to quit cat footing around with the guy that shot her, stop trying to figure out what range his IQ is in, and ensure quick judgment. If the collective LE structure functioned properly in our country guys like him would already be serving a prison sentence.

Point out to congress that they need to force the courts to enforce the letter and spirit of the laws on the books. Given everything else they are doing that should be pretty easy for them to do...

After poking around a bit more I discovered a thread discussing this bill in 2007. So I agree this one is not going anywhere at this point.

Looking at this and other similarly rabid bills got me to thinking.

Could it be time to move towards a more permanent solution?

Let's face it the 2nd Amendment is constantly under attack - mostly by those who want to deny the purpose and intention of this amendment. So why not address this once and for all by amending the 2nd Amendment to clarify and solidify our constitutional rights?

We would need 33 states to ratify the amendment. It might take several years but in the end we would put an end to the debate.

Thoughts?

The 2A is written clearly as it is...the problem is liberals and antis like to "interpret" it, apply it to the modern day, argue about where the commas are, and say that the states can regulate guns to their hearts content. No reason to believe any of that would change no matter how it might be amended...you just cant fix stupid...

But the Constitution is a "Living document" and is not meant to be interpreted literally. Our society has to evolve and grow, and in so doing, the Constitution be damned!
