.50 Beowulf

The .50 Beowulf was designed for use on a standard AR-15/M-16 lower. The original purpose was to give an average rifle squad the ability to stop vehicles at checkpoints with a round to the engine block. It's definitely a rifle round, but only works as advertised out to about 200 yards. The recoil is about like a 12 ga shotgun. As I recall, the conversion only requires a .50 Beowulf upper and magazine. I've had one on my wish list ever since firing one on an HK-416 lower a few years ago. Awesome zombie killer, going through a whole line of them if arrayed appropriately.

Wow. Two thoughts: 1) That's a heavy upper; and 2) Ouch!!! I'm betting that you'd need a pretty hefty buffer to go with a .50 BMG, with an impressive butt stock pad.

I shoot a lot of 3.5" 10 and 12 gauge at waterfowl, which doesn't seem to bother me. But the .50 Beowulf has an uncomfortable amount of recoil and leaves bruises. I think the reason is obviuosly that little bitty buttstock and the lightweight AR frame.

The Beowulf is a real thumper. I love the effin things so much I got three.... not to mention I built the heck out of them for three years. Loads of fun, coupled with a lot of thunder and lightning. They put a lot of thump in the hands of a commoner, and allow enough energy and destruction to pretty much down anything for good in the North America, including the big bears.

Since you were building these Jacob, any suggestions on finding a barrel? I'm interested in building either the beowulf or a .458 socom, but barrels seem to be difficult to find at a reasonable price. Plenty of uppers, but I prefer to build my own.

How the heck do you find enough ammo to SHOOT 3 Beowulfs? Stuff's scarcer than hen's teeth last time I checked. I guerss you must reload.

Well- having worked for AA as lead gunsmith/QC inspection, I got a LOT of experience and the chance to shoot the heck out of them, as well as pick up a lot of 1x fired brass Also I am set up to buy/sell new brass with my little bitty custom shop business, so I can shoot when I want. I got a historical Beowulf for my wife for her birthday one year. It was one of 3 T&E guns carried by Petraeus' personal security team to stop any automobiles from running barricades and really hammer down on sappers.
I once talked to 'Naval Spec Warfare' personnel that used Beos to take out sappers running the perimeter and they loved it because it stopped them, AND generally detoned their vests, so there was no EOD time hahahahahahahaha.
As far as barrels, they are out there, but not cheap or readily available. Liberty was making them, but Bill put a stop to that. Now they do it as a 12.7x42mm to get around name copyright, and it is a Beowulf by another name. There will be more of these types of barrel soon. Trust me.
