Actually thats how I found out it was dissmissed. I did a background check through a online service and there it was dismmissed. I've printed it out and you say I should get in writing from the lawyer as well?

Contact the Clerk of Courts for the appropriate jurisdiction where the charge was dismissed and ask them for a Certified copy of the dismissal. They will want to know the case number if you can provide it, otherwise, they should be able to look it up by your name. You'll probably have to show up in person to pick up the paper so that they can verify your identity (they sometimes won't release certified copies to just anyone).

IANAL but if you were not convicted via dismissal then there is no conviction. Not meaning to sound smart alecky but the gun laws refer to those with a conviction. I would recommend a couple of things:

1 - gather up all the court record where it was dismissed and check with an attorney.
2 - use the same attorney to get the dismissal expunged. relatively easy if you havent done anything else since.
3 - go forth and sin no more...

Edit: If you have money to buy guns/ammo you have money for an attorney to make sure of where you stand...
No more catchy slogans for me...I am simply fed up...4...four...4...2+2...
