One more affirmation to the goodness of the Maverick 88. I too have one and use it for the reasons you mentioned (HD & fun shooting). Mine is the Security model with the 18 1/2" barrel. I only wish I had the 7 round tube instead of the 5 rounder.

The 870s are good guns, but I prefer the 500/590s because of where the pump release is. On the 870s it is forward of the trigger and not natural to engage IMO. The 500/590s have it just behind the trigger so you can engage it without moving your hand from its nominal grip.
Yeah I guess it could be a slight problem but in %99 percent of situations I would have the time for either one.

Really? Huh. I just got my first Mossberg, and I am hating that release location. Perhaps I'm just used to how Remington and Ithaca do it.

Do you have small hands or a pistol grip? The release should be right under your middle finger when holding the stock.

Pistol grip. And apparently my hands are small.

I plan to swap it out for a bird's head type grip, maybe that'll help.

I'm not a fan of pistol grips on shotguns. I wish the LOP was adjustable like on an AR so that my wife could handle it better.

I wouldn't put one on a Mossberg due to the tang safety. I have seen some problem cut down shotgun stocks with a table saw for a shorter LOP. Maybe try that.

Putting a stock on it defeats the purpose of having a smoothbore pistol.

Then it would be to short for me. Adjustable stock is the only way to fix it, but putting a AR stock on it basically limits you to a pistol grip, which I don't want.

One of these days. She has her own AR that I'm trying to pimp out for the time being.

Wow. The only one Young calls her's is a Beretta .25 auto, which I bought for myself. The problem is I've bought her 3 or 4 others. Most of those are now "mine."

I'm not sure she is sold on it being hers yet. I think all of the .22s are definitely hers and the G19. I think she has eyes on my LCP though...

I have the pistol grip + AR style adjustable stock on my Mossberg and love it. My thumb is easily able to hit the pump slide release without my having to move from the ready to shoot stance. When I was choosing between a Remington and a Mossberg, that was the deciding factor since I prefer pistol grips as they are easier for me to aim and acquire my target with.

I'm also a fan of pistol grips on long guns especially those used for hunting and target. Makes it easier to put less of me on the gun and allow it to rest easier on something solid...and for me it does make pointing more natural.

I've seen two Remington 870's in Virginia for $200 (this was on Gunbroker), so they are to be had. New Mossberg 500A 7+1's are at gun shows regularly for $249.

Walmart sells them for 177. I just bought the NEF 20 pump for 159. It feels and shoots very well.

Generally, the Maverick 88 can be gotten for between $175 and $225, and most Mossberg accessories will fit it. THAT makes it a great deal! Mine came with a std stock and a pistol grip, 18" barrel. Tried both, (She kicks like a mule!) liked the pistol grip MUCH better. I used a rasp and file to shape the polymer pistol grip for the webbing in my hand, now all but the 3" magnums are a breeze to shoot. I did have to add a strap to the forend to handle the 3" shells. I love that when hanging straight down from my hand, the barrel clears the floor by 2". GREAT HD weapon!
I've seen WalMart selling a rifled barrel WITH scope for $159 for Mossberg 500s, which WILL fit the Mav88. Tough, reliable gun for very little dinero. :fireright:
