The squirrels in Henry's woods are a little bigger than that one. They get fat eating the food plots he sets out for the deer...some of them look to be around 10 pounds. I may need to bring something bigger than my .22 mag.

Sorry I missed this but driving for about 3hours with all the crazies in the white stuff doesn't make for a relaxing day, Especially with firearms in the car
How was the hunt? Hopefully there are a few less treerats running around (and simmering in the crock pot with some veggies).

Since I didn't get home 'till 3:00 yesterday after a 4 hour drive that normally takes less than 2, the squirrels were safe. 10"s of snow on the roads and ground didn't help either. There's always next time.

Hi VaHunter,
I would like to go squirrel hunting sometime on your place but that is a bit of a drive from Alexandria, VA where I live so I'd have to do a weekend trip if that is permissable sometime.
I'm 57 and have hunted a fair amount, but not recently. I respect the property rights of others and I am safe and courteous when hunting or fishing with others and very much appreciative of having access to anyones land. I have a lot of experience with guns, spent 9 years in the Army and used to hunt a lot when I was a kid in Louisiana on my grandfathers place. I also have a hunter saftey training card from Colorado.
I recently inherited a Savage model 24 combo gun from him, 20 ga mag and 22 L.R. that I would like to give a try. I also have a Reminton 1100 12 ga and Fieldmaster 22 I have used to squirrel and rabit hunt with. But I'd like to give the Savage 24 combo a try.
I am coming down to Briery Creek Lake to do some kayak bass fishing the first weekend of March however, which isn't that far from your place.
If not this winter, then perhaps in the Fall?
Take care,
Mike Vance

Mike give me a shout when you go to Briery, I'm on about 15 minutes away. We do have a squirrel season coming up in June if you want to try it. Make sure when you go to Briery you use at least 17 pound test for bass. Reasons being that the state flooded timber when they built it so may be fishing in 50'-60' of water and be sitting on top of a standing oak tree so you'll want something to pull them through the limbs. Another reason is it's stocked with florida hybrids and they get big. People who know how to fish the lake regularly catch 10 pounders or better. There's a little country store about 2 miles north of it, Worshams is the name. They can tell you how good the fishing is and what most people are catching them on. Good Luck.

Thanks for the invite to hunt with you this June, I had forgoten that VA has a summer squirrel season, great idea, I'd like to do that.
And thanks for the advice on line test, I've not fished that lake before but it's reputation is well known. You are one lucky guy to only be 15min from it. I was thinking of using two set ups, a bait casting rod with either 65# braid on it or at least 20 mono. Not sure about the braid yet. And a medium-heavy spin casting rod with at least 12 pound test on it. Perhaps I should upgrade that to 17+ pounds. Maybe I'll bring a lighter spinning rig or two for bream and crappie.
I've heard about the trees, no wonder it is a great bass lake. I'll be back again a few times this year to fish it I'm sure. Didn't know it is stocked with Florida bass, that is very encouraging, those guys are monsters.
There is a small group of kayak bass fishermen coming down that weekend. You can check them out on:
http://www.kayakbassfishing.com/ . There are a lot of guys from VA there, some are local to your area I think. I'm also planning on a fishing trip to VA beach in May to go after some Red Drum and whatever bites then. That will be a blast.
I'm planing on leaving work a bit early on the afternoon of March 5th, Friday and driving down to meet my buddies to camp that night at Twin Lakes Park camp ground. We'll be the guys with the kayaks on our vehicles. Drop in for a visit and if you get there before me, just tell them that you're lookin for MikeVictor...or Mike Vance...my real name. I've never met these guys, this is my first trip with them. They are bass fishing fanatics from what I can see on that web site.
I"ll PM you my cell phone.
Thanks again, I'll take you up on that June offer to hunt on your place...
Mike

Hey sorry I missed this post back in January, but I really like hunting squirrels. Do you have both Red and Gray Squirrels? Maybe next season

Must not be much for them to eat. They're coming into my dog pen alrady looking for walnuts (there's a couple of black walnut trees inside the fence). The "boys" almost got one a couple of days ago.
They're also eating up the plums that fall on the ground from the trees behind the dog pen. I hadn't seen them eat plums yet. They work over the persimmons later in the year but this is the first year they've bothered the plums. Hope they stay out of the peaches as the peach trees are between my house and the neighbor so shooting is out of the question.
Also seeing them along the road dead in increasing numbers which seems to be when they are moving farther distances looking for food. I can remember a few years ago when I stopped counting dead squirrels along I64 between Richmond and Charlottesville and got to 100 before I got to Charlottesville.
Nature thins them out some years.
