Am I looking in the wrong places for ammo? When I check aimsurplus and cheaperthandirt, the 5.45 and 7.62 rounds are very comparable in price, but when I read forums I hear about the uber cheap 5.45... I to am trying to decide between a 47 and a 74

I would also try Midway and Ammo to Go...they usually have decent prices on bulk or singles...

For the OP, saigas are really nice rifles. For higher capacity magazines, there are federal law compliance issues that are solved with US made parts swaps. A full conversion can get you a pretty nice looking rifle.
