But I'll bite anyway, I would say that a "good all-around rifle" is a 30-06 from any reputable manufacturer. You can get ammo anywhere, bullet selection is almost limitless, and it has been used to kill pretty much everything on the planet.

Not a trouble maker! Maybe it the question wasn't put quite right. I'm sure everyone has their own opinion. In order to avoid a "flame war", how about just pointing me to some reading material? I have a copy of Hornady's reloading handbook, but unless you're a gun geek you know that can be some pretty dry reading. Might just go to the prepper's convention SI posted in the general forum.

I just got one in .308 and I love it. Only test fired it so far, but it looks like it has a chance of quickly becoming my favorite rifle. I was surprised how light it is too. And how little felt recoil there is for being so light.
