I'm pretty much in agreement with the original post, but one of my favorites near the top of the list is Ride The High Country - Joel McCrea.

See? I don't really count "Quigley Down Under" even though it's in my top 20 movies of all time, simply because it's not "The Old West".

Jeremiah Johnson is more "Mountain Man" than "Western", but I can repeat that movie from beginning to end...

And I don't count Back to the Future III, even thought TECHNICALLY it IS a western... and a fairly good movie, but the plot was not traditional.

The fact that most of these movies have been ON TV this weekend? TIckles me plumb silly... because it validates that INDEED! We do like some good westerns.

Now, "High Plains Drifter" with Clint Eastwood as "The Ghost" was an AWESOME movie, but a little unconventional to be a traditional.

McClintock is a FINE movie, and might I say, Maureen O'Hara in her hayday was a HOTTIE! Flat out!

But that's still not in my top 5...

Another Western that I completely forgot about, and LOVED? "Once Upon A Time In The West" with Jason Robards, Charlie Bronson, and Henry Fonda as "Frank" who inspired The Who to write the song "Behind Blue Eyes".... But it's in my Top 20 movies of all time.

That's seven for you. Why didn't you just make it a top ten list?

Make that eight. I forgot about your tie for #5.

There's a "Mountain Man" genre? I do declare!

Top FIVE! If I went higher than that? i would be lost...

HELL YEAH THERE IS A MOUNTAIN MAN GENRE!!!

The mountain man genre can include "last of the mohicans", Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, etc. etc. It's basically "Cap and Ball" rifle movies showing exploration of the new country.

I only have five, but I have 20 movies that need to come with me in a spaceship because they could play indefinitely, and I wouldn't tire of them.

Well,don't hold back. What 20?

BTW, Once Upon A Time In The West would definitely make my top 40 countdown. Jack Elam and Woody Strode with bit parts? Who saw that coming?

Daniel Boone, Davey Crockett, and Cooper's writings were predominatly East of the Mississippi, weren't they.

Johnny Depp or Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka, Rev? I'm gonna guess Wilder...

Singin in the Rain is a great movie for improving ones attitude. Better than Calvin Coolidge... put together.

Taggure, the fact you even KNOW it? Earns you cool points!

What sucks? David Caradine wasn't even supposed to play it. Bruce Lee original penned the idea, and they ran with it, when they got funding, he turned it down. He was making a fortune with Run-Run Shaw and his own movie company.

Could you have pictured BRUCE LEE in those roles? That would have been incredible! Or even in the role of CORD!
