Great point!bryanrheem wrote:IMHO, the NRA is an organization that WE NEED to push back against gun control. I can understand this statement even if it was a 'political' statement.
Gun control activists are savvy, and the pro 2A group needs to be just as savvy.

Sometimes you gotta dance with the one that brung ya. The NRA has been good to us for the most part. They are a powerhouse politically. I'm gonna give em a little slack here.

Re: NRA says open carry of long guns is "downright weird"
I dunno why this is such a tough thing to face. Open carry on the hip fine. But open carry of a rifle is just dumb, and has never and will never help us because of the idiots that do it just because they can do it.
Not sure why we can't cut our losses on this one because we have lost far more over the past year due to it than we have gained.
Tho at the same time I wonder how many of these people are really anti gun plants trying to make a scene. Bout time we play their game... but I would just feel dirty pretending to be anti gun.

Re: NRA says open carry of long guns is "downright weird"
I have to say, though those guys are not doing use any favors, why take. "I give up" or a compromise stance? Since the birth of our country and before, arms (long, short or otherwise) were a daily part of life. It was expected that you carried a gun.
Over the centries, the cowards and ignorant have been pecking away at our God given right to defend ourselves be the best means available. And every single time there IS a compromise, we as gun owners always sacrifice. Insteand of giving up everything, the libs abd progressives say "well, how bout this, then we'll be happy?". But it never stops and they are never happy.
I for one, I won't just give up. I'm going to keep spreading the word, donating time and money, and open carrying whenever its practical and whatever is practical.
BTW, here's the soap box back. LoL

But you can't say there isn't a right and wrong way. Dressing like slobs, while posing for a picture in chipotle, while borderline brandishing, is not the correct way.

You mean to tell me in the "Land of the FREE". I can't go into Chipotle dressed like this?

Just food for thought...tha Las Vegas armed citizen may have had a better chance had he been carrying a rifle.

Generally speaking, I would agree. The problem is, I read he tried to talk the guy down instead of shooting him.WRW wrote:Just food for thought...tha Las Vegas armed citizen may have had a better chance had he been carrying a rifle.

I know the poor guy tried to do the right thing and as a citizen of this country and a member of the human race, I am proud that he tried to do the right thing. He died defending innocent people and he is a true hero in my view.
That said, I don't mean this in a poor way, but as a life lesson from his experience. In my humble opinion, before you engage an hostile, you really need to be aware of your surroundings. Be sure that you are aware of any potential threats other than the first one you see. Try to ID who potential victims could be. Always make an effort to act from cover or concealment to help provide some level of protection to yourself. Most importantly, don't pull a weapon unless you are going to use it and be sure of your target.
Maybe some of our infantry friends who have seen combat can help a little more there... or a LEO who has been through it... but that is what I am seeing anyway.

Yeah, just food for thought. Concealment with barrier, distance of engagement, and increased lethality immediately came to mind. Not being mindful of ingress point seems to have been this fellow's fatal error.MarcSpaz wrote:Generally speaking, I would agree. Re: NRA says open carry of long guns is "downright weird"
My take on this is pretty simple. Having the right to do something and it being the smart thing to do are not the same.

Re: NRA says open carry of long guns is "downright weird"
I re-read through this thread and didn't see any discussion of the fact that it's not legal to open carry a handgun in Texas. Therefore, the only OC option is a long arm. If I remember correctly, it's even illegal to "print" while carrying concealed. If you're in Texas and carrying concealed, better hope that you're not printing well enough for your sidearm to be identified as such.

Re: NRA says open carry of long guns is "downright weird"
As I recall, this thread was active at the same time a thread about some Texans OCing rifles was active. I'm thinking that the Handgun laws in Texas were discussed in that thread.
As it is, I support the open carry of pretty much anything in a public area, regardless of how many others are doing it.

Re: NRA says open carry of long guns is "downright weird"
Best post. It is not the small neighborhood businesses that are in opposition to guns but they can have a negative affect on their business.trailrunner wrote:I used to more open minded about this, but I think OC of long guns is hurting our cause. It's forcing businesses to be in the middle of something they probably don't want to be involved with. If you want to do an OC protest with long guns, go out on the in the street and do it that way.
And having someone handle the gun in the restaurant in the low-ready position is doubly stupid. I don't care if his finger is off the trigger or if it's a photo op - he shouldn't be touching it. Stupid, stupid, stupid. As a gun owner and someone who is very comfortable around guns, that would bother even me.
And I'm not convinced that the long rifle carriers are carrying for protection but an expression of "in-your-face" because they can. They may feel it is a supportive 2A protest but if it has any impact on a small business it is just wrong.
I hope they don't start showing others how fast they can get into the "ready" position in these places.
