So I think your earlier theory still holds true for most people because regardless of whatever top shelf rounds are capable of, people train with and stock tons of bulk, surplus, and ball ammunition.

Yep... not surprised either. I can get a box of 500 bulk 855 for $200 or I can buy 200 new high-end 77 grain match grade for $200. Considering most of us are poking holes in paper for fun... why spend $1+ a round when I can spend $0.43 a round.

300 yds. if good for me.

I also don't hold with the idea, especially around here, but true for most places, is if someone is far enough away from me and not headed my way, why would I let them know where I was by shooting at them?

All the talk of 1000 yds., magnums, etc. is okay but in a SHTF situation, why would you be letting everyone for miles around know where you were by taking shots at someone so far away you might not even be able to tell who they were?

This ain't the middle east (where you can see forever) and the idea is to survive it.

And what the SIG has over the SKS is 30 round detachable magazines, a flat top rail for scope/red dot mounts and its a SIG.

Oh, and that folding stock means you can carry it around in a smaller package in a vehicle or hanging by the bed.
M1A4ME, I am not sending this to you specifically, but the quote is a good seque to my post below.

There are very few gun owners in our country that are active military or police. I think that those folks would primarily be the the people putting in combat work past 300 yards. I find it extremely unlikely that, even if ground troops move into the US, very few civilians will be creating tactical combat squads and units.

In fact, it might be dangerous even when you come across friendlies, because our police/military and other armed civilians are not going to know who you are. Having your citizen based squad getting mowed down by friendlies is a distinct possibility. Ever her the expression "Don't Self-Deploy!"? Its said for a reason.

In my opinion the majority of us should be focusing on personal defense, defense of family/friends/non-combatants; and securing a physical area. The next item would be acquiring food. 1000 yard gun could be great for open plains hunting. Just because you cant see more than 100 yards around your house, that isn't everywhere, and you may just find yourself in need of a good 1000 yard gun. Plus, wouldn't you think that if the only place you can see past 100 yards is in the streets, that is specifically where you may be fighting or hunting and need a weapon good for mid to long range?

I personally don't plan on engaging anyone unless I know they are hostile. I also think that snipping human hostiles in a SHTF event is only going to happen if you are on the offense of a known hostile target location (not very likely) or if you have parameter scouts giving you a radio head-up that you have incoming (also not likely as a civilian).

Now that I have further contributed to the derailment of the thread, I think some folks are loosing sight of the purpose of the thread... and ultimately the weapon.

If you like the power and performance of an AK with the modular design of an AR... as long as you aren't a fanboy one way or another... this could be a good weapon for you.

My next purchase will be this AR in 5.45x39 - at .16 per round, those corrosive spammo cans are gonna get chewed up by this baby:

This way I'll finally get my AR *and* have commonality of ammo with my AK.

What's the point of an Ar shooting an AK round from AK mags? Why not just get an AK and be done with it?

The Sig556R is the answer to the question that potential LAR47 owners are asking.
