I don't have mine yet, but I like the Mossbergs because of the safety placement.
I've fired the Remington. Nothing against its working, just prefer the Moss.
Also, gotta have a sling on 'em!

I have three shoguns. Living room, office, and bedroom. No special gear, just big 12 gauge booming sounds.

Mine is a Mossberg 500A 12 gauge, 19" barrel, and six rounds of #4 buckshot.

I have two that are used for home defense.
1. S&W3000, 12ga pump, 18 inch cyl bore, ext tube, pistol grip side folder with a built in SureFire in the forend.
2. Saiga 410

The Mossberg 500 and the Remington 870 are both excellent choices for HD. They are both so versatile and you can add accessories to each to make it exactly how you want it. I am currently working on a Mossberg 500. It is the persuader with a 20 inch barrel. I put a folding ATI stock on it with the saddle to hold the extra shells. I am waiting on surefire forend that has an integrated light and switch. I'm thinking about possibly going to a collapsable stock and some optics.

the benelli M4 is all business and my first choice for a top level tactical shotgun but, you can't beat price and volume of accessories available for the rem 870.

Can't go wrong with either the 870 or the 500.

I have an old Ithaca Model 37 Deerslayer - Police Special. My dad got it for me years ago. I love it. Holds 7 or 8, short barrel. Regular stock, but I've never had a pistol grip stock on a shotgun so it works for me. It uses the same port on the bottom to load the shells and eject them.
It's a great gun, the only downside is that it isn't as popular as the 870 or Mossberg 500 so there aren't many accessories available for it.
One cool thing about it also is that you can hold the trigger down and pump it and it'll fire each time you pump it.

Just out of curiosity, what do most of you use for ammo in your home defense shotguns? Slugs or Buckshot? Any particular reason you prefer one over the other?

Slugs? Come on - reason? SCATTERGUN. Scatter means clear out quickly.
Buckshot all the way.

11-87 3.5 super mag - 00 buck fer me... so, so, so, so many (fun) uses...
(I am currently looking for a mag extender, and a rifled barrell for it...no cantilever)
870 Jr. Express - 20 ga. w/ tru-glow hi-viz optical pipes - stuffed with #4 - fer the little lady...plus she likes to cycle the action for the awesome "freeze or else" sound it makes...
plus, i do not know about shotguns as Jewelry, and it could just be me, but when she carries it slung, she goes from "Damm FINE" to "Smokin' HAWT"!

I too prefer the Mossberg to the Remington. My advise would be this.
1. Get the milspec version of which ever you decide on. They are way more solid than anything else.
2. Get one that has a mag tube as long as the barrel or close. For a HD gun, there is no reason not to have the extra ammo ready if needed.
3. I prefer a basic bead sight over ghost rings. However, my current one has the ring setup. If someone wanted to pay to have the sights switched, they could have the ghost rings for nothing. Better yet, swap a Mossberg 590 with bead sight for one with ghost rings and the speed feeder stock? Any takers?

Another good choice is the Hatsan Escort, if you can get it cheap. I've seen 'em for $200 brand new. Basically, it's their knock-off of the Rem 870 tactical.

I prefer to use my Glock 23, but my wife doesn't especially like to fire handguns, so we also have a Saiga/K-VAR SGL41.
