dmharvey - Yes, it is the same for the most part. You'd need to account for the bulged front trunion, larger diameter barrel, and 1.5 (instead of 1.0)mm receiver.

This is true. I dont think its that much different than a standard AK. The only thing that would make this build different is you would need a reciever flat die that is for a 1.5mm flat. The rest should be almost the same. Saw a few ppl doing RPK kits at the build parties i attended. Large diameter barrel shouldnt require any special tools.

That said-- one thing I saw mentioned is a discussion about chrome-lined vs. non-chrome lined barrels in a build party. If we are going to parkerize at the party (and I think we should because it looks nice) people with non-chrome barrels need to bring something to plug both barrel holes and the gas block. Otherwise, dont parkerize it, just use Cerakote or Alumahyde or whatever you like.

I will be in possession of a flat bending die and punches soon. Anyone else willing to chip in some tools to help make this happen in the new year?

I have a a number of files, drills, dremels, and other bits. Nothing AK specif but a lot of tools that are handy I could bring. Let me know what you in need of, I might be able to swing it if no one has said item.

Thank you for your help. I am sure they will come in handy. We need these specific tools-

1) Barrel press tools.
2) Riveting jig (both trunnion riveting and trigger guard/center support jigs)
3) Spot welder (I will buy the jaw tongs from AKbuilder if someone will lend a HF welder)
Nice-to-haves---
1) sand blasting cabinet ( I have an air compressor and will buy blasting media if we find someone to lend this)
2) Parkerizing tank (just a metal tank long enough to dip a furnitureless AK into)

Anyone have any of this stuff to further this build party along?

I have the HF spot welder.

I also have a plastic tank that I've used for removing cosmoline from SKS barrel/receiver sets. Should work fine as a parkerizing tank, I would assume.

Woohoo! A spot welder and a blast cabinet? This build party may just get off the ground yet!

I am not sure about the plastic tank... My understanding about parkerizing is that the solution must be kept around 180-190 degrees, which would require a flame or some other heat source.

The park tank at the CA build party was metal and was kept above a couple propane burners to sustain the temp.

Well, that won't work then. I tried to find a similar tank in metal but had to settle for a plastic one.

I pour 180-190 degree water in it to scrub off the cosmo, but there's no way it can be externally heated.

This is a commercial finishing tank http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools ... d1062.aspx

You can make them out of roof flashing. I've never tried it but it seems this would be less sturdy. Check out this video on making a tank.

Check out this video to watch some parkerizing.

I have the Toth tool rivet jaws. Just need a HF bolt cutter for them. It'll be the easiest way to crush the rivets.

Its official: AK-Builder flat bending die and punches inbound. I spent a nice chunk o' change getting ALL the punches AKB has... regular 1mm, 1.5mm (RPK flats etc.) and the MAK-90 chinese flat punch.

:machinegun:

Hey 762, you have the Toth boltcutter jaws? NICE... both my AKs were rivetted with those guys and they do a great job. I might have a few questions to ask you....

safaridave-

I've got them, yes. I also have a needle-nose pliers that has been modified to aid in drilling the trunion holes. It was cheap and would save time so I picked one up.

Those pliers are pretty cool too. I saw them at my last BP when the guy who made them was prototyping. They seem really handy for those who get flats without holes predrilled.

I have done both types, and I can tell you that predrilled holes can be easier even if you slightly misalign the trunnion.... "Just egg em out" was what our resident expert said. The pliers are great for the person who wants to do the "perfect build".

I am going to catalog my MAK-90 rebuild story and photos in the "Large Bore and Assault Rifle" section. From demil to final finish... I have to start taking pictures tonight. If I finish it up at the BP, thats cool. I just think this will be a good primer to get people interested. Thank God I found a supplier of Chinese AK rivets... they are slightly bigger than the European AKs.

Try akfiles.com or ak-builder.com. AKBuilder has some kits that include a completed barrel. He has a nice Polish Tantal kit... chrome lined barrel too.

We are looking for a location. Optimally it would be a place where we could test fire on site. If thats not possible, then a place with enough land or neighbor separation where 5-10 guys can work on thier rifles without upsetting any liberals.

Wait... I thought that upsetting some libbys would be a perk to the project?
