Winter camping

I thought about you winter campers today, as I drove through snow covered mountains in Colorado. As pretty as the scenery was, I will never understand why folks want to play and sleep in it.

The one time we were out there, and it was 0-4 degrees at night, even with the sleeping bags, and Sportsman's blanket, it was still a balmy 30 degrees in the tent, so Naglene bottles freeze up HARD (IE: they do not BURST!).

The new ones do not burst, but I have found that repeated thaw freeze cycle will make them crack. The clear ones are harder. They crack first.

To answer questions:

Tarp over the fire- If it's high enough that you can put your hand comfortably over the fire without it burning, you're okay. We slighted elevate one side to let smoke escape, and with the angle being slight on the sides...heat that normally goes UP, stays LEVEL.

THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME ABOUT THE CLEAR NAGLENES! I was about to order three! I only have the milky opaque! That saved me some trouble!

Snow is an insulator, you build it up ALL around the tent, put a tarp over the area? You have NO wind. Put the sportsmen's blankets on the floor, and over the tent before the rain fly, put a couple hand warmers in the foot of your sleeping bag... Brotha... SLEEP IS SOOOO GGOOOODDD!

Who would want to go camping in the Summer/Late Spring/Early Fall!?! Bugs, Heat, Humidity, better chance of rain, also, Lotsa hippie/yuppie-REI campers... Screw that! Gimme cold, and private land! Like having a Hotel suite with a kitchen, great room, and private bedrooms!

Hell! You ain't had fun till you have to poop in 20 degree weather! That's a FAST action!

YESSIR! This is CAMPING WEATHER!

I would LOVE to be outside in 20 degrees! I'm like a big ole' St Bernard...minus the keg under his chin...maybe.

Get my 0 degree Slumberjack bag, my poncho liner, my R9 rated Expad air pad, put a couple Sportsman's blankets around (Over the top, and on the floor)...I'd sleep like a baby!

I took my Winnebago out for a little spin this afternoon to WAWA for a 24oz. cup of Joe and 40 gallons of fuel ....Then stopped at The ABC Store for some Early Times , just to keep the stock pile up...Close to Winter camping as I want to get for Now !!!

You crazy winter campers will love what I'm sitting in.

I got caught up in that snowstorm just outside of Indianapolis. I'm looking at -12 degrees Fahrenheit. But, wait! That's not all! Factor in windchill and humidity, I'm feeling -40.

I know a great Camp Ground in St. Martin.... Lot's of Bars and Nude Beaches.... Maybe we should plan a VGOF Winter Camp Outing Next January !

Back from another winter camp:

Things practiced- Making a fire with flint and steel, finding food sources by foraging, looking at locations to making a camp "Just-In-Case", radiant heat sources for a camp fire.

Things eating- Chili, chicken wings, andouille (butcher shop, not grocery store) with red beans and rice, a breakfast fit for a king.

If you can find time to practice these things you make life easier later on.

Even had time to find some small "ironwood" trees cut for the kids to practice making walking sticks.

You work with char cloth with the flint and steel?

I did with the flint and steel. I didn't with the ferrum rod. I make a "reverse bird's nest" of tinder, hit that puppy with the rod, and up she goes!

I used the char cloth one of my fellow campers made with an empty paint can (purchased empty from Lowes), you put a hole in it that a toothpick fits, put it on a gas grill side burner until it stops smoking, put the toothpick in quick, then let cool overnight.

Denim Char cloth works REALLY well!

Was tempted to get out … local place is near which is a good 'safety' measure if I can't stand the cold. Just drive back home!

Store water bottles upside down so that they freeze from the bottom up and you can still unscrew the lid and drink from the top. Hot water bottle while sleeping is awesome!

I was SUPPOSED to go, but it got cancelled for a mulitude of reasons...

I AM supposed to go on March 15th in King George, praying for snow.

Time is running short on winter camping. I was just out in California, and it appears to be showing signs of spring. It was very refreshing
to see flowers blooming.

Also, I have been washing bugs off of my windshield in several states. That's another sure sign of spring.

(sigh) I know. Sad days till September....

This was a rather weak camping season between family issues, weather, and illness, didn't go but about 5 times instead of our usual 7.

Had a blast this weekend. Just one night... Highs low 30s and lows hit teens. Nothing my 4 degree bag and a pillowcase of fire warmed rocks couldn't handle.

Getting dressed in the morn was COOOOLD as I forgot to stuff my clothes in there.

We ate like Kings too.

Any suggestions on how to keep large jugs of water unfrozen?

Fire, scotch and cigars!
