A lie is a bit strong, perhaps a misrepresentation by exploiting biases is a better way of stating it. E.g. Affordable Care Act has nothing to do with being affordable, nor is it going to provide "care" better than the existing system. I could give many examples, but you get the point. Within their context, the numbers a computed correctly or the statements are valid, it's just that they change what they are computing in order to manipulate the intended audience. E.g. raising the debt ceiling doesn't raise the debt. Technically true, but highly manipulative of the intended audience and ignores the fact that the debt ceiling is needed to be raised in order to increase the debt; otherwise why are they asking for its increase? Same with how they play with debt, deficit, and reductions in the rate of growth are spending cuts rather than smaller spending increases.
In short, they're playing everyone for fools and guess what, it works. I'll leave you to philosophize why it works.

I am with you. the mere term "affordable care" means it will not be affordable, nor care. I also wonder, because it was named by politicians, whether it was an act or not at any point.
The semantics of terms and their abuse is really infuriating for me too.
We do need to replenish this tree. I am very disgusted by what will be left for my kids.

Those of us who have worked with software development projects know just how well this is going to work out.
The best analogy I've heard is that they will attempt to get nine women together in hopes that they can create a baby in one month.
But don't worry, they are totally going to get it right this time.

Pardon me for waxing earthy, but I think that old standby about "polishing a turd" is pretty appropriate. The version used in the Hillbilly Nation goes something like this:
You just can't polish a turd.
No matter how hard and how long you rub it,
It just won't hold a shine,
And you wind up with nothing to show for it
except sh!t under your fingernails.
After all, this situation just cries out for an excrementitious reference.
