Wanted to get the Ruger 10/22 but then I saw a Remington 597 OD green with a scope.
It was priced at $170 at Dick's. It looked really pretty. What do you guys think of the
Remington and anyone own one? Thanks.

I don't own one. But I did a lot of googling about the differences between the 10/22 and the 597 before I purchased my 10/22. From what I understand, the 597 has magazine issues.

I saw that also. That there were problems with the mags and that it was easy to resolve
the mag issue or am I wrong?

I don't know, since I don't have a 597. Maybe somebody with one can chime in here, but from what I recall the issues with the magazine only got resolved with the 3rd gen versions that only recently have hit the market -- and there is no way to specify a 3rd gen magazine when you order them.

When you put that against the 10/22, where the Ruger magazine is near flawless and the after market Steel Lips and TackSol higher capacity magazines are good enough, I just couldn't see getting a 597. And, of course, the after market accessories for the Ruger 10/22 are plentiful.

I have had a Remington Model 572 for many years and I LOVE it.

It shoots very well and is very fast.

Thanks. I do love the fact that I can do so much on the 10/22. I just have
to figure out and save money on getting the 10/22. For now I think I will
get the Remington 597.

Remington HAD a magazine issue. Several years and a couple of magazine generations ago. They've corrected that problem now, and the 597 has turned into a pretty decent rifle for the money but this is the internet and old problems never go away.

I've got one that I got for bad weather squirrel hunting. You know when I don't want to haul a walnut stocked rifle out in the rain or snow. It's a good shooter, and feels like a full grown rifle in my hands. Mine has jammed a total of one (1) time since I had it. That was in the very first magazine of ammo I fired from it.

Personally I prefer the 10/22 but I like walnut and blue steel (actually I like the 77/22 best). If I just wanted a 22 rifle to hunt with or plink cans, the 597 would do just fine.



Say. I've also got an Ithaca 49, but mine is in 22LR. I wanted one when I was a young fellow, but never had the money. When I saw this one all alone of the rack at Greentops, I had to have it. I doubt I'll ever do much with it, but I'm sure glad I found it.

I want to get the Ruger Archangel kit but don't want to get entire rifle.
I understand that it is a rifle that people customize alot and probably have a
lot of stock parts lying around. What parts would I need to have a complete
rifle using the Archangel kit. Thanks in advance.

Well, the big thing you'll need is a receiver, which people don't have laying around too often. Since it's the part with the S/N it IS the firearm as far as the ATF is concerned. Ruger will not sell just the receiver so you're pretty much stuck with having to buy a rifle to get one. There is an aftermarket company that makes them, but they cost almost as much as a new 10/22. They're mostly aimed at the extream high end "builders."

I'm not a fan of "tactical" 10/22's so I'm far from an expert, but I believe the "archangle" kit is just a bunch of bolt on body parts. you have to have the entire mechanicals to build one. I may be wrong.

you can't beat the $ for a 10/22 in a hogue stock for all weather shooting/hunting.

on another note, last weekend i got to shoot a buddies GSG-5, a 22LR MP5 clone and
was shocked at how well it shot. i think i'm going to buy one... anyone own one of these???

Thanks CajunBass. I guess if they sold the receivers people
would only buy that, since people change just about everything.

The GSG-5 does look cool. I thought about getting one, but for $500 I can get two 10/22's or three 597's. Plus I don't like the fact that I'd have to write the Chancellor of Germany for parts.

My new rifle. Feels really nice.
Now I need to go shoot it.

I was looking at these at the latest Gun Show up at Dulles. I want one real bad but am having a hard time justifying the cost. They are amazingly heavy and well constructed. I've seen a ton of videos on You Tube and it looks like its a blast.

the cost definitely doesn't justify considering there's work to be done to get it running reliably but, once that's done it's an awesome plinker that is reasonably accurate.
