The trick would be to tread that fine line between not allowing your exercise of Second Amendment rights to be gradually marginalized and then proscribed by public opprobrium and not alienating the general public and therefore making it easier for the gun-grabbers to marginalize the pro-gun community as a bunch of "wild-eyed gun crazies". In other words, to shoot the gun-grabbing snake without shooting yourself in the foot.

Forget for one minute about this guy or this story and remember our history.
It was not that long ago when the majority of people openly carried long guns. And it wasn't that long ago when good, free men with arms openly defended peace and liberty with those same long guns.
If anyone thinks that because the fire power has improved, the cosmetics have changed and the threat of tyranny appears dormant, that we should now intentionally handicap ourselves in our own defense and somehow should feel ashamed to be good men with arms ready to defend freedom and peace, then you have truly failed the cause more than any man who openly chooses to protect himself and others. Why should we? Because the sheep have become complacent? No thank you.
When Reagan said freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction, it was because he knew that the people of this country are forgetting its history and losing that fire to keep us free.
