I still can't see the logic behind Assad having his forces carry out this type of attack, bringing even more western pressure against his regime with no apparent benefit. I find it more plausible that the Islamic extremists/rebels would stage this type of attack to foster western support and/or encourage the west to respond with military force. There is evidence that this approach has been tried in the past. Whatever the case, it will be interesting to see how Iran responds to western military intervention, both immediately and over the long-term.

This Syrian problem reminds me of a saying I heard some time back. It is going to be like picking up a turd by the clean end.

Couldn't agree more.

Just watched some guy talking about regime change. Change to what? Ralph Peters, on O'Rielly last night, pointed out that we have our enemies killing each other. :fireright: :fireleft: Why step into the middle of that fight? There is the complicating factor of Iran, and I'm not quite sure how you stop them from taking part in this fracas. The current proposal to use Tomahawks will slow things down a little, but they'll be right back at it. This seems to me to be not much more than blowing up some abandoned aspirin factory in the desert. I don't understand what the administration hopes to accomplish here that will have any lasting effect.

The US will never pass up an opportunity to set the seeds for another war about 20 years down the road.

In any event I really hope Assad stays on top. One less country bloodily given to Jihadists and the world gets reminded of the concept of national sovereignty.

In my not so professional opinion. It is all poop. We should not be policing the world. I agree that what they are doing to each other is horrible, but they are doing it to each other. When they start to threaten us physically then let us respond until then we are not the police, we cannot afford to police the world. We don't have the money/manpower/or even other countries consent.

Yes our "administration" cares, because of oil, like some of you mentioned. Our "administration" would not care as much except they are worried that their money will run out. Yes it will suck when oil gets more expensive, but is that black gold worth our friends and family's blood? Is it worth our going into even more debt, and possibly collapsing our economy? Is it worth a WWIII? I am thinking it is not.

The saddest thing about it all, is I feel like I have no control in any way what so ever. I am not the only American out here that thinks this way. I will continue to vote, to try to get my voice out there, but ultimately it is up to the dictators that care nothing about their constituents. As one of my favorite history teachers used to say "history repeats itself, especially for those of us who do not study it. Its all the same stage/story, just different actors."

Whew
I am sorry I will get off my soap box and go hide in my hole again.

All it's going to take to trigger war in the Middle East is for the oil to stop flowing. A well planned attack on a tanker in the Suez Canal should be just the ticket.

If the administration is that concerned about oil, then why is the pipeline project being blocked so vehemently?

UN Official, Syrian Rebels Used Sarin Nerve Gas, Not Assad’s Army

But who cares? They want a war, they will have it, but it will be you or your children who will die for it. They will collect the profits.

+1! Build the pipeline and send the environmental whacko's to Syria. Start setting up a storage/distribution/fueling system for all the natural gas we're pulling out of the ground. Stop buying oil from our enemies, and let's get at least a little more independent.

When facing an apparent contradiction, check your premises. This administration does not see the price or supply of oil as a problem. Their goal is to bring destruction and chaos to America so that they can seize power.

Yeah; that, and it would be easier to justify "alternative energy" initiatives (they think, at least) if gasoline were north of $5/gal.

Lets not forget the massive oil boom going on in our own country. If Syria's destabilization has a negative effect on global oil supply, then maybe that helps us instead of hurts us.

Creating chaos seems to be this administration's forte. There is a premise to start with, when trying to figure out why they do what they do!

And today, in what could be the ultimate expression of zero self-awareness, the Obama White House introduced its official Christmas ornament for 2013. It has the slogan "Peace on Earth".

http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/201 ... -ornament/
As President Obama readies a possible military strike against Syria Thursday, the White House 2013 Christmas ornament is going on sale with the slogan, “Peace on Earth.”

The White House Historical Association is advertising the new ornament on its website and on signs around town, including one in Lafayette Park across from the White House. This year’s ornament honors Woodrow Wilson, the 28th president, who pushed for a precursor to the United Nations.
Note that Wilson was one of the founders of the "Progressive" movement which has pushed for all of the fascist mutations of our government over the past century. Wilson was a particular admirer of Germany and the totalitarian ideology of Bismarck. He was also a blatant racist who screened the KKK movie, "Birth of a Nation," in the White House.

First I've heard of Wilson being called a Teutonophile.

Kreutz, look at his academic career, in particular his 1886 essay, "The Study of Administration".

Looks like the U.K. and France are getting cold feet. Bet they're scarred sh!tless of Putin.

So, you know what that means. President Gutsy Call is going it alone.

Can't wait for the NY Times to call him a warmonger.

Even worse than calling him a warmonger, call him Bush! He is terrified of being compared to Bush! It's just a goose/gander thing in my view.

Follow the money, friends. More precisely, follow the gas pipelines. Keep in mind the Leviathan field off Israel and Lebanon. Think of how Russia - whose economy relies on expensive natural gas and oil - feels about Israel (and all of the EU and US energy interests) potentially shaking up that market. Did you see how fast Russia offered to fund Egypt? It's all about energy.

The Russians say they will keep their base active, but their is a long term reason for courting Limassol in Cyprus.

One last comment - remember when Biden said this, and the liberal press cheered him? "I asked them to put together [for] me a draft, which I'm now literally riding between towns editing, that I want to make clear and submit to the Untied States Senate pointing out the president has no authority to unilaterally attack Iran. And I want to make it clear, I want it on the record, and I want to make it clear, if he does, as chairman of the foreign relations committee and former chair of the judiciary committee, I will move to impeach him."
