And, I applaud your judgement to leave a round unchambered until you feel more comfortable. Only you know where you are at. When you are ready, you can make the switch, if you feel you need to.

Another option is simply to train unchambered. The israelies go even further: they have no mag or round in the firearm in its holster. They practice to draw, load the mag, and load the round during draw. I hear people talk about time lost, and such, but the israelies are nothing to sniff at. Figure out where you want to be, and do that, don't be swayed by the crowd.

Your current decision also has major advantages: anyone trying to grab your gun will be surprised when nothing happens!

The Israelis are often brought up and it's a fair point to consider, but not relevant for the typical SD situation IMHO. Handguns in the military are primarily carried as a backup to their primary system which is a rifle. Also, they typically fight in groups and know that they are entering a war zone. The average citizen exercising their rights has none of that. FInally, the thinking behind their style of handgun carry is NOT about tactical wisdom, but rather about reducing accidental discharges due to frequent load/unload operations which would otherwise be required. Our state department often doesn't issue ammo to the Marines guarding our embassy's for the same reason, doesn't make it a wise idea for CC/OC.

The importance here is that he/she is comfortable. You can talk training all you want, but most people have families that stand in the way of the time and money to train well. On the other hand, practicing rack during draw can be done at home without rounds, or with dummies.

I dont devalue your opinion, but what matters is the carriers opinion.

Work out your comfort, and practice with it. Thats what will do you best.

I point out the israelies because they are successful with this method, and its even worse than the OPs. Hopefully he can find what works for him/her.

Sorry, that sounds combative to me. I think I need to get a good night's sleep.

Just want the OP to find what works for them, rather than cave to peer pressure.

Personally, I carry my 9mm with pin lock on, loaded; and my 1911 (by the way great even concealed in hot weather!) is cocked and locked.

I can't believe I am becoming a 1911 snob, LOL.

You will default to how you train. However, just because you train a particular way does not mean that is the "best" way. The 21ft rule or experiment is based on a chambered gun, racking probably easily makes that more like 50ft.

Yes, and our Marines are usually successful protecting embassy's without ammo. Does that make it ideal for CC/OC? It would be absurd to suggest carrying around a firearm without ammo merely because a whole bunch of Marines are required too by a government that really doesn't trust them or the quality of training. Investigate why the Israelis carry like that, it's not applicable to CC/OC and it's not a good tactical solution. It's a political solution like our Marines not having ammo. Tactically stupid, but politically correct. When you work for the government, politics always wins.

Because the Israelis do it makes it an example, but it doesn't make it a good example.

I just found another reason to like revolvers. No need for this argument with a revolver, lol.

IMO if you are not comfortable carrying a firearm with a round in the chamber, you are not ready to be carrying that firearm.

I am a typical CC'er (in that I'm just a guy going about his business with moderate situational awareness) and keep one in the chamber simply because I know the odds of successfully racking the slide in a high stress situation or active struggle for control of the weapon do not bode well for me.

The safety is almost always on because it really doesn't take much training (done at home) to get the muscle memory to flick it off when drawing and it takes a split second. I'd rather have it on for the peace of mind in regards to an accidental discharge.

Just my 2 cents.

Your comfort level and situation should dictate your carry policy.

Here's Rob Pincus discussing the same topic. We preach exactly the same thing to our students.
