Yup, screw the freaking unions! Should have let GM go under too.

Look, I'm ambivalent about private sector unions. If I feel they negatively impact the product or service of the company I can always avoid them. This is not so with public sector unions which I truly believe should be banned since I saw what they did to NY.

But anyway, a union gets "in" somehow. And its not by magic.

Management strikes a deal. They are responsible for the union being there in the first place. Yes, the laws vary state to state and all about the "right" to unionize, but at the end of the day management must acquiesce to unionized labor or not. They can always close shop and relocate, or fire and replace the current workers, and some do. And thats fine.

But if they choose to allow it, they must bear the burden of the choice. Its their responsibility now. Its no different than if I let my kids eat five pounds of candy if I crack after hearing them whine over and over. When they puke their guts out I only have myself to blame for scrubbing vomit from the carpet.

Because I am the boss and all consequences are mine and mine alone.

IMO part of proper managing is owning up to your mistakes and based on what I can tell the management of Hostess made alot of them, the least of which was letting a union shop crop up at all.

Low skill workers are easy to replace. If these union workers want to be respected, get an education or skill set that makes them valuable instead of one that a border jumper can learn in a day.
