I follow the "Come-Heres", "Transplants", "Carpetbagger" theory as I have stated:
"ComeHere's" want our freedom, culture, and hospitality. They didn't like what was happening, and came to join us.
"Transplants" live here long enough to go to college, or work in the government, with the plans on leaving to move back to wherever they came from... Don't let the door hitcha, where the good lord splitcha... They screw up politics because they have no vested interests.
"Carpetbaggers" move here because they HAVE to move here because of work, or marriage. They complain about the place, the people, the culture, and talk about how "great" things were in their old locations. Which I counter with "If they were so great? Why don't you move back? We don't need you."
Hate...carpetbaggers.

Sheesh, all I bitch about is that there isn't sweet tea on every menu, grits aren't available for breakfast at as many restaurants as I'd like, and the freakin' socialists are trying to take over!
That being said, I did have to move NORTH to get here.

We plan to be "ComeHere's" wherever we move.
If anything, I would try to influence our destination to score better on the George Mason Mercatus Center Freedom Index (
http://freedominthe50states.org/). Virginia doesn't have far to go, being ranked the 8th most free state. Interestingly, our second choice (Tennessee) is ranked 3rd in the same study. New York is #50 without counting the NY SAFE Act. We'll probably be ranked 57th in the next release.

If you can handle long brutal winters I recommend NH. I think they've been #1 for ever, and their license plate keeps the reason why fresh in everyones mind.

but the property taxes in NH are horrible! Also, the Old Man on the Mountain is gone! (sorry to see him go, we were up there about a year before the collapse.)

Wyoming is #36 overall, down 5 places from 2009.
New Hampshire dropped to #4 from #2 in 2009. Partially due to the property taxes mentioned by DryBones.
New York was #50 in the 2009 listing as well.

I don't want to move out of VA, but I am thinking about migrating downstate someplace if I can make the job thing work. NoVA politics are driving me nuts, but there's no other state I'd want to live in. Well, maybe Alaska if it was a lot warmer, or California if all the weird people were removed.

So not free then? Too many Massholes have transplanted to NH. Saw it all too well when I lived up that way. It use to be a great state.

Always going to be some taxes (unless you're a squatter), they're as old as civilization. I'm not sure how diligent NH is in fiscal responsibility but I have a feeling it runs a much tighter ship than its neighbors.
Massholes ruin everything.
