@RWBlue:

My girlfriend, who is an EMT and spent some time working with young children in schools, has observed that, indeed, the "hand sanitizer" kids were always sick or under the weather. The "pigpen" kids were healthy and robust.

I, too, would love to see such a study.

I haven't read any responses yet, but I'll give a similar example (in my mind)

It's 1300, aguadilla Puerto Rico. Wave height buoys displaying 12Ft breakers with a period of 10 seconds (okay conditions for a decent 35+ FT vessel 2 miles offshore if your a good Coxswain). All of a sudden my SAR (Search & Rescue) like rings. Some citizen is reporting 2 children in the water being pulled out by the currents. Name of the beach: Locally named "Survivors Beach." I've worked cases here and it's only a 2 minute helicopter flight to be rescued. I dispatched the helo and in the back of my mind I remembered my last case where a National Guardsmen drowned. Luckily the two kids and their FATHER had a boogie board to hold on to but by the time the helo got them (+10/15 mins after initial call) they were understandably exhausted and suffering from shock.

Now, this is job security, but I can of fathom the amount of STUPID one must have to even think About taking their 9 yr old son and 13 yr old daughter out into conditions like this. People feel as if rules do not apply to them and that they are entitled to do whatever they feel without thought of what they may be affecting.

Your way of feeling is completely in line. Regardless of religion, personal taste, customer is right. I would have told the person sorry, we're closed, come back between the hours and X and Y. Just like the rest of the customers before them understood the sign that they more than likely walked by. Also, if you don't have the proper equipment then it's also your duty to inform them that you don't have it and that the working hours still stand. If they would like they can be the first customer there in the AM with fresh clean blades ready to carve their whatever porkless meat they want.

Entitlements belong to those who deserve them, work hard and make a decision to strive for them. No one is entitled to a clean porkless blade, your religious endevour is your choosing and thus you should EXPECT a few headaches from it. That's why your religious anyways, it's a "journey" filled with trials and tribulations. Mine says eat the hell of what is given to you. Not in gluttony but in thanks for what He has provided.

Coastie, can you translate the first para to landlubber for me? I tried google translate, but they only had esperanto, urdu, latvian, and basque and it didn't translate well. I thougt they also had klingon, but i guess support for that language was removed.

Allergies are weird things. I have read that kids that were raised in clean environments with a smoking parent and no pets are the ones most likely to suffer allergies. I was raised by the typical 50's mom in a very clean environment and she smoked when we where young. We did have a pet but it was a poodle for low pet dander. Myself and all my bothers and sisters of course have horrible allergies. Besides the normal hay fever like things I am allergic to nuts, the tree type not peanuts. Whatever is in nuts, i am also allergic to carrots, celery, apples, dates, etc. Fortunately what ever is in these foods is changed enough by heat that I can eat them, so i can have apple pie and roast beef with carrots.

My children that were raised with multiple pets and a slightly less clean environment and no smoking have only minor signs of hay fever and seem to be allergy free.

I can see trying to get pork free food if you have an religious objection, but to make a deli specially clean a cutter for you does seem ridiculous. There are specialty deli that serve kosher and I assume in areas with high Muslim populations Halal. The other offer the customer could have made is to say, I know this is a bother but would a 10 buck tip make it worth your while to clean the machine before cutting the meat.

This discussion reminds me of the old adage "God made dirt, and dirt don't hurt."

A lot of folks don't respect the lady of the sea as much as they should! However, thinking SHTF type stuff, the more prepped you are the better. Carry EPIRBS, Flares, Life Jackets, and at LEAST a 5 watt handheld radio! :coffee:

Basically that means that for common folk, Mr. Recreation once a month fisherman, couldn't/shouldn't attempt to go out on the water, much less SWIM "in the drink" as we call it (the water). That's some rough sh*t and even our guys need waivers to go out there to conduct Search and Rescue in (unless they're in our fancy self-righting boats).
