Welcome to the Forum !
Powhatan County and surrounding area's are very nice and still very rural. I'm sure you and your family will love it !
Re: New From New York
For all the other New Yorkers posting in, I was born and Raised in Manhattan and moved to Albany in 1987. My beloved was born and raised in Mastic and moved to the Hudson Valley area about the same time.
After we met and things progressed, we bought a house in 2006 in Rensselaer County, where we currently live.
Thanks to all for the friendly welcome.

Whoa, memory lane thread! I haven't been to Hicksville in ages, went to a reptile museum there last time I went, mustve been 2003 or so.
Huntington is still by and large a nice place, Huntington Station is still a ghetto.
We haven't been back to visit relatives there for two years, we're going next summer though.
This summer we're taking a road trip to Colonial WIlliamsburg and Newport News, we've never been further east in VA than Bedford since moving to Roanoke. Any other cool stuff out that way? Especially tasty bbq and seafood?
My understanding is pack heat at all times in Newport News, my wife wants to take the kids to some giant childrens museum there, so what can ya do?

Re: New From New York
Lat night we got back from our first exploratory trip to Richmond. We stayed in a hotel in Glen Allen and visited New Kent, Amelia, and Powhatan. A great time was had by all.
At this point, we have pretty much decided on Powhatan County between Powhatan proper and the Chesterfield County line. When we come back down in fall (September/October) we will meet with a realtor and start the property finding process.
If any of you are members of the Powhatan Fire Department, thanks for your hospitality. One of the things I want to do after we move is continue my activities as a volunteer fire fighter.
We stopped at Southern Gun World and Dominion Shooting Range in Chesterfield. More friendly and welcoming people.
For those who like wine, Bodie Vineyards are great folks. They came out in the snow (at least what Virginians consider snow
) to let us taste some wine and buy a couple of bottles. After chatting for a few minutes, we were even asked how soon we could move to the area.
Virginia is looking better and better. I need to find more graphic design work and/or a job teaching computer applications/graphic design in the Richmond area.
Thanks again to all the friendly, hospitable folks we met this weekend. You convinced us that this move will work out well for us.
