This is what I do in my Chevy, holstered with the holster bands sliding over the passenger side pouch. Works very well and is readily accessible. Granted I do not have kids so this is where I keep it while on the road. The steering column mount that I have seen was a blackhawk holster screwed to the column. I think zip ties may work but would worry about sliding issues.

No.. Gun needs to be locked in a case or safe, out of reach of the driver and stored in a physically separate location from the ammo.

Not true. VA now has a secured container law that allows anyone over 18 who can lawfully possess the firearm to keep it loaded and accessible so long as its in a secured compartment. No CHP required. It's basically a special exemption of the "commonly observable" clause for open carry.

As of July 1, 2010, a concealed handgun permit is not necessary when carrying a handgun while in a personal, private motor vehicle or vessel and such handgun is secured in a container or compartment in the vehicle or vessel. The term “secured” as used does not require the compartment to be locked. OAG opinion 11-111.

Notice that the statue does not make any statements concerning the firearm being loaded or unloaded or chambered.

So I'm wondering if I need locking cases for rifles/pistols and ammo when transporting in my truck? I don't have a locking glovebox or center console and will have everything in the back seat of the crew cab. No CHP yet either, but that's in progress.

Based on what gunderwood posted, which is current code of VA, no, you don't need a "locking" bag or case. it says "container or compartment" being a bag/case or glove box, trunk, etc., not on your person. That's good to know.

Got one of those little lock boxes. Anything else and I dont have proper control over the weapon, and thats no good.

Keep in mind I only do that at school, where I cant carry a gun around. The rest of the time its on my person.

Someone on this forum suggested a console vault, and I bought one. Very good to have. When I'm in the car, I set the combination and open the lock so I can just reach in at any time. When I leave the vehicle, I lock it. Much less worry about pistols and any other valuables when the vehilcle is unoccupied.

This weekend, I was travelling with a little bit of cash. I have a little "belt bag" that's a flat nylon bag the size of a dollar bill that zips shut and has a webbing belt on one end you pass your belt through and then let the bag hang inside your waistband. I dropped it into the console vault and hit the road. When I got where we were going to a child's birthday party at a "party venue", I locked the console. Then it wouldn't unlock. The combination unlocked the lock, and the wheel rotated, but the lid wouldn't open. Tuesday, I got a locksmith to get it open. Seems the little webbing loop had gotten around the vault's locking lug and been pulled into the lock; thereby fouling it down. Moral of the story: Be careful what you put in a console vault. I know I will in the future.

For CHP holders only... Right hand IWB holster clipped to my dash. The way I have it mounted, it is turned off to the left. If there is an accidental discharge, I won't shoot myself in the foot. LOL

Pretty easy to reach and out of the way. Though, I am not entirely sure how welcoming this would be to a L.E.O. if I get pulled over. It is legal since I have a CHP, but I am 100% sure that it would make them very uncomfortable at best. Need to work on an idea for that.
