So Dormin, are you saying all Zero-Tolerance policies are dumb? That's how I read it at least. I mean... What's your take on zero-tolerance for illegal drug use? Would you allow a crack head to be a cashier for ya?

As for input into this deal. What numb skulls. I'm saddened to see a corporate company having more interest in their own butts than their own employees and customers.

Oh wait. That's pretty normal. 'tis why I try to shop mom & pop shops as much as possible for just about anything.

Do mom n' pop auto supply stores still exist? I'dthnk the chains crowded them out years ago.

Getting due for an oil change soon and gonna have to get the stuff somwehere, can't use AZ now.

Sure they do. They don't advertise as heavily, so you may have to ask some old timers in your area.

For sure they do! There's a quite big supply store that a lot of folks use in the NNK called Callao Supplies run by the Deitz family. We've used them for as long as I can remember. They got everything from plumbing to lumber.

Maybe he's not, but I am...

When you have "Zero-Tolerance" you have no hedgeway when extinuating circumstances present themselves. I realize that "Good Sense" has lost it's way in this world, but it seems to me, having that "wiggle" room makes a better policy.

What about the straight A honor student expelled because he took his dad's vehicle, not realizing there was a shotgun in the trunk? That's happened because of "Zero-Tolerance" policies. It's wrong to not have leeway when things are outside of the policy.

It's like "Mandatory Sentencing" I don't believe in that... I think Judges, Prosecutors, and Police are able to determine a fitting punishment without Legislation.

Sometimes we think protecting ourselves FROM our selves is a good idea, but in the end you're just pushing an agenda onto to someone.

I'll gjve it to ya on that Rev for sure and I whole-heartedly agree with that example too. It happened to one of my friends at school actually. Dads trucks and loaded 12ga behind the seat leaning against the side. Policr officer strolls through and finds gun. They did give him a break though as the Pops took the rap for it and of course it was within hunting season.

I don't feel all Z-Tol policies are bad though, especially alcohol consumption and drugs in the work place. It causes an unsafe environment for employees and customers and impacts the work force. I certainly don't want to pick up slack because Tommy Too Toned is baked from smoking a doobie out back.

As far as this situation. Meh. Yeah he jacked up and brought a gun to work. Sure he could have endangered someone but he didn't.

Now - here's a good story! Coast Guard Recruiter. Brings personal defense weapon to work. Not just in his car, but literally inside. Weapon discharges for unknown reason (to me). What happened to this guy? I'm pretty sure he got discharged for bringing a weapon onto gov't property that wasn't of the gov't.

I can see the recruiters point. These places get attacked a lot recently. But ya know, if Uncle Sam felt you needed an Armory, he would've given ya one.

The short answer to your question is that zero tolerance policies don't apply to illegal acts because the legislature has already imposed a zero-tolerance policy as to them. That's not a policy, though; it's a collective societal standard. A policy is a rule that is imposed by someone who controls a venue or enterprise as an overlay to generally applicable government-imposed laws and regulations. And all that being said, there are some people who under some circumstances involving drug dependency and substance abuse by employees who would worry that an employer had an obligation to afford such an employee an opportunity to get "treatment" for his "illness". In other words, my statement assumed the current legal and societal backdrop without exhaustively reciting it.

Longer answer is: what if the cashier in your example has had surgery and has a prescription for oxycontin? As Rev has just posted; there should always be room to handle the unexpected extenuating circumstance. Which is why in my post I said the policy should have been "No guns on-premises **without approval of management**".

If the cashier is using crack-cocaine he or she is seeing the wrong doctor lol. Zero-tolerence on drug refers to illegal stuff. Coke, crack, marijuana, heroine, etc. In my example using oxy for prescription uses I would definitely hope the owner/manager says nothing about it unless they want a lawsuit in their face. As long as there's validation the employee is using as intended it's all good (in my eyes).

There definitely has to be a sway factor to some policies. There's not many Z-Tol policies that truly make sense. There's too much grey area where going against that policy could result in a lot of good.

Notified Autozone as soon as I heard the story and informed them they lost me as a customer and why. The young man did the right thing as far as I'm concerned despite the "what ifs" and "might haves" and other conjectures that are all speculation at this point. He displayed initiative and guts to do the right thing. The way this was handled reflects on the top management of the company.

Im all about supporting local business I understand that they cant compete on price with the chains and I dont mind spending a few more bucks but some of the independent auto part stores are ridiculous in price. For the most part it seems they cater to supplying shops so when your a guy off the street you get the FU price.

When pennies more could go to either auto maintenance or the food and clothes budget, I was there with you.
Depending on the local dealer, some will discount that "FU" price as they see that you are a regular customer. Older area residents will know which dealers those are.
