Culling through a collection of reports, it sounds like the wrestler was on some kind of amphetamine-based or like drug with psychotic and possibly hallucinogenic properties. He had attacked two occupied cars before the LEO and even tried to bite a woman while growling at her. It sounds a lot like the Miami face eater case. The campus cops aren't trained or issued Tasers, so the officer had limited options when being attacked by a physically strong psychotic, whatever the cause of the psychosis. Pepper spray doesn't phase these drug users. I'm not a cop, but how much of a bye to we give to psychotic druggies?
If this psycho-acting wrestler attacked us or our families in similar circumstances, I'd bet that any of us would have shot him to protect ourselves and our families. I'm not a fan of cops with a messiah complex, but that doesn't appear to be the case here.

I can see your point when you add those details to the story, but I'm still not sure a cop is entitled to the same consideration you or I would be if we were protecting ourselves or our families. He VOLUNTEERED to keep the peace, and is, in my mind at least, obligated to BE trained to handle these things better than I might be able to. Maybe there was no alternative; but on it's face you'd think there was some way to restrained somebody who's butt nekkid without killing them. Take out a kneecap, maybe.

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.

I appreciate your point about the training. Campus cops tend to be one step above or equivalent to mall cops. I'm not sure how much training they have, but I doubt it's impressive.
However, I had to cringe at this:

Take out a kneecap? Of a moving, erratic, psychotic target? Sorry, that's the stuff of movies.dorminWS wrote:Take out a kneecap, maybe.

I knew you were going to say something like that. I was really just using "kneecap" as a metaphor for some disabling shot. And I know a center-of-mass shot is the default position on defensive shooting; but I just don't like the idea with a naked assailent.

I remember a comment that a famous airshow pilot, either Bob Hoover, or someone else once said of a Piper J3 Cub: "It's flies just bare fast enough to kill you."
A naked psychotic can kill you as fast as a dressed one, you'll just be more grossed out during the process. Amphetamine- or psychotic adrenaline-fueled psychotics tend to have "super-human" strength, sloughing off pepper spray and Taser shots by the handful just as we saw in Miami with the face-eater. Go one-on-one with one and you'd better be Chuck Norris wearing soft body armor. Maybe that officer was a second away from becoming a face meal for the psychotic. My humble opinion is don't do the drugs if you can't live or die with the consequences.
