I went to college not far from the Adirondacks; many of the locals looked like extras from that movie.

Well there is a difference between redneck and white trash, to me redneck is the blue coller joe that is a little country fried and who usually have an insane sense of humour, as a matter of fact there's a few around here...<< >>. Then there's is white trash the senseless humourless bible beating(usually) A**hat, of which I've seen none here, thank goodness.

I know a lot of rednecks, and I know a lot of white trash. Not a single white trash acquaintance even owns a Bible, much less thumps upon one. Though, should they ever acquire one, all they'd be able to do with it is thump it. (Probably against the head of that girlsistercousinfriend that they keep in the back room of that ragged out old trailer) They certainly wouldn't be able to read it. They tend to have bad grammar and worse teeth. Probably because toothpaste makes beer taste funny, and besides, they wouldn't want to accidentally get toothpaste spit in the bong water.

That about sums it up nicely. So many people think NY is just Manhattan, no, its a huge state, and man oh man, most of it is actually rural. Some very rural. And not always in the good way (what I guess us metro area types would call "country"), but the meth lab and dead bodies off the highway kind of rural.

Fun fact: The highest concentration of incest is not in WV or even the south, but in upstate NY. This is due to small communities (kibbitz-type villages) of Orthodox jews who marry second degree relatives (couins, nieces, etc.) as a matter of course. After a few generations of that, given the small population, the chromosomes get unstable and their kids have some truly weird birth defects. Now you know!

I lived in Schenectady up until I was 11. It was... interesting. I was back there a few weeks ago to see family and I don't miss it one bit.

Visit a real Chasid community in the Catskills (like I did once, invesitagting Medicaid fraud) and you'll see Schendectady is probably downright normal lol.

The fact that our respect for our heritage and security in our selves largely makes us tend to not “put on airs” and “get above our raisin’” by aping the homogenized speech and mannerisms of the mainstream mob does not mean we’re too stupid to do it; it means we have to much respect for the way we speak and act already, OK?

So why don’t you folks pick on black people or Jews for a while now? If you get the swastika backwards, most folks will never know.

I hope you don't think that I was amongst those pickin' on the country folk. I rather admire the country folk; they are the ones raised on tried and true survival skill. When society crashes, they are the ones with the best chance of, not only survival, but perseverance.

Like it or not (obviously you picked "not") rural folk are stigmatized as being all the things you listed.

Truth be told? Most "bumpkins" are smarter than the average Gothamite in terms of intellect, but your average city slicker is more, I guess world savvy?
