Your example is of a contract signed under duress which is unenforceable. Its entirely possible (even probable given the power of public unions) her contract was entirely in good faith. In which case the district (and the taxpayer naturally) is on the hook.

And yes, the contract is probably enforceable (I was only using that example to highlight that the expectations were unrealistic - your "duress" objection is a little off the point); but only insofar as the other party has resources to pay. That is why I said they should go bankrupt and leave the teacher's AND the union high and dry unless they want to renegotiate for something that is within the means of the system.

Municipal bankruptices may well be the future contract renogiator. Pension obligations are a huge problem in the Northeast and upper Midwest. The crap they pull in NY is one of the major reasons I left, it sickened me to support their lazy asses.
Lets see, she says at age 60 she would have 43 years of service. Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't 60 - 43 = 17 ? What school system hires teachers at 17? No wonder our schools are in the mess they're in. Either hiring teachers the same age as students or teachers that can't add or subtract.

I'm pissed I can't retire in three years myself. I had the opportunity to work for AOL before the IPO. I should have bailed out of college and been a techie in 1993, but nope, I stayed in college and I STILL don't have a degree. Feh.

Oh, they're entirely qualified to form the minds of the youth. And they do a stellar job of it too, since that's what all the teacher's colleges are set up to do. It's just that the goals of the system they serve are rather different than the ones most normal, unsuspecting people believe are the goals of the system - so what comes out looks like failure to those people, but to the folks running the show, is exactly what is supposed to come out: illiterate dullards who can't think for themselves and are incapable of being adults.
As an example, literacy has been dropping for over half a century, in spite of having vast amounts of attention, concern, and money lavished on literacy programs in schools. The simple fact of the matter is that it's not hard to teach children to read, it's not even hard to teach adults to read. Why, then, can't children read?
