BBQ, Shoot and Greet 8-25-2012 @ The Cove in Gore, VA

I was just up there last weekend. A guy in a crown Vic made it to the range. I wouldn't recommend bringing a nice car, but anything with more clearance that a normal passenger car should suffice. A 2wd truck on slicks should be fine so long as its not raining. I figure if its raining, you guys may not want to get the "nice" guns wet anyway.

Yes, the ground looks as if someone put carpet down that was made of shotgun shells and spent brass. A redneck paradise and then some. A young fella walked out there with an SKS and shot the ground right in front of him. Yelled and walked back to his buddies with the rifle pointed in their direction. I looked at my friend and told him I'd rather be fishing. So we left. I didn't feel like pulling out my jump bag for those idiots.... At least not that day. It was hot. I would have broke a sweat and got my new shoes all dirty.

I try to make it up there during week days when no one else is around. On weekend days there are some folks who need a bit more training on safely handling firearms. Anyone with a 4WD should have no problem making it up to the range.

It look's like I may have to consider a greet and meet at my place again next year if all of my surgeries are healed up and I am good to go.

Went to The Cove for the first time about 6 weeks ago. We were able to make it up to the range in a 2WD Mariner and Explorer on a dry day. Really had a great time, and everyone was minding standard range safety rules minus one genius who called the range cold and started walking down range before everyone could clear their weapons. :bangin: I can't commit that far out, but it sure was a blast and any excuse to go back is a good one. Fishing was OK at Lake Leckszas, we had better luck than the other campers I talked to. Anyone camping should consider sites 43-45 in camp 3. It's off to the side, next to the lakeside cabin/cottage with some privacy right on the lake, and close to the bath house.

Word to the wise, we brought one of my cousins along who refused to sleep in a tent. She had to have the cabin, brought along a full size mattress to sleep on, etc. That cabin is barely more than a shelter. (The horror on her face when she saw the inside was classic). The second night we thought an axe murderer was slaughtering her in the cabin around 2am from the sound of her screams. Turns out she got up to pee and a baby mouse fell out of the ceiling onto her foot. :hysterical: She grabbed a broom and beat the ever living poop out of that little mouse. I really liked the cabin, but don't spend the money thinking you're going to stay at the Four Seasons.

This post is extremely long over due but it will still serve its purpose. Here are a few pics of the "range" at The Cove. It looks a little more like a small dump than a range but for 15$ all day long & you can shoot whatever you bring (as long as its legal in the state of VA) you can really have a lot of fun. Everyone who was at the range appeared to be mindful of the people around them and carried out proper gun control. I will be going again this month to take better pics and have more fun!

This is a pic of the 100 yard section. Over to the right there is another section and on the left is the section where me and ZwergVI set up at (there is actually two areas in this section)
Image

This is where we set up. over to our right is another area where a group of three eventually made their way to.
Image

Some of the toys we brought out (the Glocks were on our hips and my YHM 6.8SPCII was still wrapped up)

ZwergVI behind the 18" RRA Varmint AR15

And I cant find the pics I took of the road but I was able to find the pic of where I parked my little VW at when it couldn't go any further.

I will keep looking and post more when I find them. Hope to see everyone again soon!

Just to add, I was at the range today for an hour or so. I'd recommend to anyone going to NOT wear flip flops or sandals. There is quite a lot of metal/glass laying around and a few "blown" up tv's and computers. It may also be wise to carpool because of the road being so narrow. I had a truck so I had no problems getting up there, but as previous posters have said if you have a car, you'll definetly have some trouble. Its a shame that people leave so much trash lying around, I guess most people don't care. I filled up 2 trash bags full of crap that I took to the dump after I left, so maybe everyone can pick up a few things while they're there.

While it's a bit far out 4 me,sounds like fun.

If I can attend,I'll bring ;

Chicken Quarters
Baked Beans
Potato and Macaroni Salad
Targets and stands
Grill

You'll know me by my VGOF Sticker and my Beretta hat...

One thing that may be doable...

The Cove has some heavy equipment onsite to maintain the trails and roads.
I have been there the day after they cleaned the Range, and all debris was strategically placed for removal.
A well timed phone call might clear that debris up nicely. 8)

Sgt Bill please know that you are in our prayers.

My daughter still talks about the day that we spent there at your place and all the fun she had there.
We would both love to see you again.

I haven't met any of you yet, but I'll try to make it out. If I can, I have a big grate that will turn any campfire into a grill and rotisserie. I can't make plans that far ahead though. I should know the week before if I will have time.

One week out, I will post what is confirmed, and what we may still need.

I just pray that we are blessed with beautiful weather now.

Please put me down as a maybe.

I've got some guns that I'd like to re-zero at 100, a spotting scope, etc. Hopefully I'll have a rangefinder by then to set up true yardages.

Great news, Reca and I talked to the guy at the front desk at the Cove yesterday and ask him when they were going to clean up the range. He told us he just bought a dump truck so hes going to clean it up within a week. We had an amazing time yesterday, I can't wait to see it all cleaned up.

25 people? Just want to make sure that's what you meant...so we can [try to] be prepared.
