just to be clear... pretty much *any* medicine you might be prescribed, developed in the last 20 to 30 years, was tested in some cell line or another that has been modified in some way to include a receptor, enzyme or bioprocess of interest. some are animal-derived (CHO - hamster, NIH-3T3 - mouse, PC12 - rat...), others are human-derived (HEK293, HeLa...). i can't answer how the cell lines were originated, but i'm sure most of that is available in the scientific literature searchable at pubmed, fwiw.

the push to use cells came about for many reasons. two of which are: pressure to move away from animal models, and to speed large numbers of potential drug molecules through the discovery process. i know these things because i spent many years doing IT support in the pharmaceutical industry. i learned much about the drug discovery process.

Ok, happily my family is pretty healthy so the only meds we have needed in the past few years have been old style anti-biotics. The same strange pink syrup I took when I was a kid. So the eeewww factor is limited.

Anyway this is just my opinion, it makes a difference if the cell line used to culture the medication was taken from a fetal kidney to me. It also makes a difference in the human cell "eeeww" factor if it is for life saving medical treatment or just a food additive. Extraordinary medicine for extraordinary circumstances and the like. This is personal theology and morality and I do what I can. I have one overarching #1 rule in my life "Thou shalt not stick thy thumb in the Almighty's eye on purpose." So if I know about sanctity of life issue issue that is questionable I avoid it if I can. YMMV

Now I've seen everything. On most forums, the two topics that are either forbidden outright or at least guaranteed to start a sh*tstorm are guns and abortion.

Now here we have an abortion thread on a gun forum! :hysterical:
