I'm not even sure he wants to shoot badly enough to go through the process of getting his rights restored.

The curent political climate supports the restoration of rights. 10 years from now, when he decides he needs to get them restored for some reason, the climate may be different and restoration might be much harder to accomplish.

I like the principle idea...if I were stripped of rights for some reason, I would seriously consider doing whatever is required to get my rights restored. You never know what might happen in the future, and taking care of it now will ensure that it's not a crisis sometime down the road.

If it was a federal conviction he's out of luck no matter what. No restoration except with a presidential pardon.

It wasn't a federal conviction. And unfortunately, it was for something he did when he was really young. He's not on probation or parole or anything.

You probably are not still monitoring this thread but if you are have your boyfriend go to the Secretary of the Commonwealths website and look at Restoration of Civil Rights. Under certain conditions his civil rights can be restored in less than 60 days. There are some qualifiers. After he gets his civil rights restored by the governor, the restoration of civil rights does not restore firearm rights, he will need to get a lawyer to petition the circuit court in the county you live in, to restore the firearm rights. If a significant amount of time has elapsed between the release from court supervision and he has some basis for showing he is a decent human being again then the full restoration of all his rights can be accomplished in less than 5 months.
