As I stated in this thread before, to get rid of the vsp backround check they had to get rid of the 1 handgun a month law. Expect to see the vsp backround check gone next year. BTW your backround check by july 1 will be just a tad bit faster.

please cite the basis for your statements.

ohgam is only one of several items that differentiate the vsp bg check from the federal nics check other states use. first, there are va state mental health records documenting certain commitments that would need to be transferred to the feds and second, there are certain juvenile criminal records that somehow also needed to be represented in the federal nics. barring transfer of that info, those va check requirements would need to be repealed from va statute before the va system could be abandoned in favor of the federal-only check. there *was* discussion of some of this in the ga this session. and... a lot of sentiment on *not* giving the feds more information.

as things stand now, the bill that would have moved long guns to a federal nics check only, was tabled in committee until next year, at minimum. as an alternative, money was added to the budget proposal to shore up the vsp system to see if it would alleviate the slow-down so many folks are experiencing. again, this was for long guns only.

This was the first step to do away with the vsp check. Without writing a essay about this issue I will pull it up again next year once the vsp check is eliminated. BTW they dont have to send mental health records to the nics.

Juvinile records are sealed 99% of the time. Do I need to provide a link yet agiain? Not trying to pick a fight nor do I have a problem but prove me wrong with facts and not hear say. The biggest hurtle was the 1 handgun a month STATE law. Dont wonder into federal law with me.

Cheers!!
Enjoy purchasing all the handguns you want to in the future

don't hold your breath.

you'll probably take this as hearsay, but i'll throw it out there anyway.
i watched recordings of the senate courts of justice committee hearings where some of this came up. the sentiment is strong *against* giving the feds any more info that would allow the federal nics to provide the same level of checking that occurs with the present state system. and... this was just for long guns. nobody even brought up the 800lb gorilla named 'hand guns'. in fact, many of the acclaimed pro-rights people spoke out in favor of the vsp system, as long as it could be fixed. even the bill's sponsor jumped onto the motion tabling his bill. i could almost sense relief in his voice.

to be completely clear, the bill never got out of the senate committee, let alone to be considered yea or nay on the floor and then sent to the house.

there was some unspoken hope, in certain circles, that the long gun bill would break ground to make discussion of hand guns in a bill 'down the road', but nobody's putting their name on any of that, yet.
