The police were there. It was a swearing in. You don't think such an event would be held without dignified members of the municipal revenue squad on hand, do you?

From my perspective the ex-cop is the bully. What he did could have been accomplished in any number of different ways which did not involve the escalation of violence he propagated.

What I hope people take away from this is that the actions of neither party are excusable, but the second act is one of retaliation, not intervention.

you get the point. :friends:

Again, its amazing and honestly puzzling how many on the rightwing speak strongly in favor of "liberty" or "rights" but cheer real damned loud when a jackboot is on the neck of someone they disagree with. The OWS guy actually can heckle a public figure on public property. Imagine that! Freedom!

Actually, yes. Thats precisely what you have to do; to put hands on someone solely for being "disruptive" will (in a functional society) have criminal and/or civil repercussions. Anglo-saxon jurisprudence and all.

How are the two even remotely connected?
Or you could point out that there was no state action here because this ex-marine ex-cop was acting as a private individual.
Uh, i did point that out; he battered a guy and got away with it (for now). Hate to break it to you, but he had no right to do what he did, ironically, the dragee did have the right to do what he did, whether you like it or not.
But the bald truth here is, we'uns applaud what was done because it needed doin'.

That help any?
And why did it "needed doin'?"

The protestor went there looking for attention and got it.

As you pointed out--there were police officers there--if they thought the guy had been assaulted they could have arrested the marine/ex-cop on the spot and they didn't.

What the protestor was doing was not legal either--this was not a public forum. This was not a sidewalk, or outside the state house. This was not a town hall. Even at such places you have to follow the rules or be booted (even less gently than he was). You can't shout incendiary things into a crowd of people. Try going to even a PTA meeting and acting as this guy did--you will be removed from the building very quickly. If you persist you will be charged with trespassing, disorderly conduct, etc etc etc, and no one is going to cry for you.

Being disruptive and disorderly has it's consequences too, as this guy just found out.

Except that a PTA meeting is a public forum.

We're not saying either of these dopes was right. We're just asking you to stop defending the one you happen to agree with.

Neither one was right.

A few viewpoints on the subject over the years:

http://news.google.com/newspapers?nid=1 ... 24,3822210

From other reports I have read there were three OWS people there, not just this one and all of them were trying to stop the swearing in. This one just happened to be the closest to the retired officer.

Words calculated to foment a riot or provoke a breach of the peace have long been excepted from the protectiuon of the 1st Amendment; THAT'S HOW.

You said something like the guy appointed himself sole arbiter of the 1st Amendment. My point was that the 1st Amendment does not protect you against having anybody but the government interfere with your free speech; so the 1st Amendment has/had nothing to do with it anyway. And I SAID the guy was technically within his rights, didn't I? And I also indicated none of that mattered because the OWSchmuck's behavior constituted grounds for asskicking by the ancient and honorable Code of the Hills (and other places good ole boys congregate).

Well, I tried, but I reckon it didn't "take". Prob'ly need to feed you a big mess of soup beans, collard greens, and corn bread and try again. Then again, you may never catch on. Bless your heart.
