I'll use either my M4-clone with Aimpoint and light attached, or my mostly converted Saiga in 7.6x39 with light attached. Why? They're shorter than an 18" shotgun, lights are attached so I don't need to use my other hand for it, I can shoot them one handed if necessary, and their both combat weapons in combat calibers. When I get the time to install the MI railed handguard and the money to get the MI mini red-dot mount on my Arsenal, that will be added to the mix. 30 rounds on tap, 30 more quickly available with each rifle. If I have to clear the house due to the po po being overstressed due to civil unrest, I'd rather have a carbine than a shotgun.

And since this is being addressed, have any of you shot your pistol and/or shotgun in the dark? Most pistols and shotguns don't have flash suppressors, all of my carbines do. I'd prefer to be able to see after making a shot.

why do you prefer a handgun for HD?
There are a couple reasons it's my go-to.

1. I am well practiced with it. The Muscle memory and reflex is there.
2. It can be manipluated with one hand, allowing me to use the other hand to grab say a phone, flashlight, etc.
3. Short barrel means that wrapping corners is easier.
4. I have a 15-rnd extended magazine I keep for night time, so no issues with capacity.

There may be better options for HD, but I trust my life to my Glock during the day, so the same is true at night.

Hope it helps,
-Alex
Great points some i would have never considered!

I dont belive everything but, if a bunch of people are saying something then hey they might be on to something. As for it being made in anyother county is not a deal breaker for me. Im looking at an 870 clone the H&R pump protector for HD. The whole thing is steel and made in china.
I've got an H&R 12 gauge pump protector, as well. That's my home defense. For the money, I like it. That said, after emptying the magazine, you will want to tighten the magazine cap. It starts unscrewing itself, which loosens the barrel tightness. The other thing is that if you blow through the rounds too quickly, the slide seems to catch on something inside, so you may want to be gentle with it.

I run Winchester Universal rounds through it, which I guess is bird shot. Using that load, the kick is very mild. H&R, by the way, is owned by Remington (or what ever company owns Remington, anyway)
I think marlin owns remington and someone else owns marlin, ahah. That sounds reasonable for a shotgun for under $200

Me thinks that you wouldn't want to touch off a 12Ga inside a house, unless you are well versed in sign language.

Cause sure as sin, you'll be deaf as a doorknob afterwards.

My 9mm or AR15, I could easily use both in the dark. It's my house, I use the dark to my advantage.

If I'm sleeping I have a 1911 beside the bed.

If I hear noise outside & the dogs go wild I have a mossberg 535 that will be loaded with 3" 000 buck as well as the aforementioned 1911 in a paddle holster on my side.

SHTF I'm grabbing the ar

My wife on the other hand prefers revolvers and I've come home from work(4pm-mid) before to find her in the living room with a loaded .357
