Just my $.02 :coffee:
+1 This book goes discusses how people make snap judgments; very good food for thought. :read:
Yes, Blink is an important read. But another book by Gladwell is Outliers, in which he argues that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to get really good at something. That's 10h a week at the range and in shooting classes, every week for 20 years.

Seems to me that what necessarily follows from that is that there are damn few people who are really good; whiuch says something about what the generally competitive level of training might be.

Gun-crazy? Me? I'd say the gun-crazy ones are the ones that don’t HAVE one.

Can't believe I missed this thread the first time through. I'm glad Excelsior resurrected it! Good reading and a lot of good thoughts and discussion points on this one.

Here's a link to the book that's been mentioned: Blink by Malcolm Gladwell

I agree with thekinetic that from his viewpoint, things may be that simple, but MamaBear hit it on the head with her dissection of the points and excellent explanation of how other points of view differ. I particularly like the statement: "Your chances of being attacked are 0% right up until the moment it is 100%."
