My very first "real" gun purchase was a Ruger 10/22 when I was 18. Over 20 years later, I have more than a handful of guns and the 10/22 is still one of my favorite to shoot.

I highly recommend that you get a few of the 25 shot ruger brand magazines.

I love my 10/22! I bought it for my son and daughter to learn but I use it the most! I have the alligator clip that allows you to clip 3 factor 10rd mags together. I also have the Blackhawk axiom stock. Now I'm wanting a can!

Ammo is cheap, dirt cheap. I always have a box around somewhere, right now I have about 1000 rounds. .

That's really not impressive considering you can buy a box of 525 for about $20

I'm in the market for a .22 rifle as well for Daughter #1's 13 B-day in Jan. Both daughters love shooting my Interarms bolt action. Dicks Sporting Goods has a Savage Arms Mark II package for about $170.

My first gun was a 10/22 as well. Great gun. Currently I shoot a Savage Mark II though. I would look into them also if you don't mind a bolt gun.

actually I went in a completely different direction -the lovely woman in my life has long had a fascination for AKs , don't ask me why-i never understand women, and has also evinced a desire to start learning to shoot as well, so I ordered the ATI import of the GSG .22lr AK-47 clone from Sterling Arsenal; I figure heck-cheaper than the real thing and if she likes the gun she'll be more likely to stick with it too.

I will post some pics of it once it comes in and i pick it up

Ruger10/22 awesome first rifle. Reliable and boatloads of fun. Mega cheap to shoot too. You can get one in stainless for ~225 too. A purchase that you won't regret!
