We don't resurrect dead threads, here.
We reload spent threads.

I so wish I could be in with the cool crowd... Being that I participated in a dead thread, alas, I continue to be an outsider.

Oh I was never ever ever part of the cool crowd. Though kind and friendly I am just a bit weird. 15 degrees off cool. That's ok. I own it and love it now.

Coolness is overrated. I was an outcast in highschool, and hung out with the other outcasts. My best friend was able to hang withthe in crowd; but that was only because the bully segment of the in crowd had all received bruises from him.

Which is nice, especially when some disagree with others. It's very rare to find civil disagreement on the internet.

I'm a 'noob' here and have always been looking for a 'who I can trust crowd'..You hear all over the web to watch out for this or that, or you need a person with a 'specific' skill in your group...I first want to be able to find a few clubs/groups to possibly join that meet periodically to discuss prepping and a SH*T plan..I know everyone wants to vent the next new guy, so I'm hopeful to find one..I'm sure this has been discussed before, so I'd appreciate to be pointed in the right direction..

There is nothing specific to this site, though there are a few members that do some various activities of that nature. Problem is we're spread all over the state, so it might do you well to find something local.

Do we have any ham radio operators?. Maybe a certain frequency for VGOF members?. Of course, that would require repeaters and such for better coverage.
Communication is critical, and the interwebs probably won't be usable for us peons.
That'd be awesome, in the process of studying for my license now. Always liked radios since I've been a kid. Had a CB iny truck for years. Was going to get a 2m radio for my current truck. A freq for VGOF talk would be cool.

You can talk station to station around the world without repeaters. The trick is to use the correct frequency, power and antenna to make the distance you want to talk.
Big, stationary repeaters are great when "most" of the radio network is on commercial power. However, some of the best repeater sites I've ever seen will only run for a few weeks to a month without fuel or fresh batteries. Also, known repeater systems will be the first tactical target that gets taken out.
When I was with ARES, I was working as an Assistant Emergency Coordinator supporting Prince William County. With near a decade of experience in COOP. My advice is make sure if you are going to run a repeater, it runs on batteries for at least a week based on about 30%-40% duty cycle... not generators. Make sure it is extremely mobile so one person can set it up or tear it down in just a few minutes. The idea will be to change the location of the repeater frequently so if the enemy triangulates its position and plans a strike, it (hopefully) wont be there once they make a move on your station.
As my forward position changed in disaster areas, my local comms 2m/440 repeater moved with me as my position changed and I relayed to a national NET on LF or VLF that was well outside the active area to relay to stations outside of my direct comms radius.

Oh yea, another drawback to common HAM radios... no cryptographic integration. Open comms is a bad idea unless you are dealing with a non-tactical situation or you want to feed the enemy BS info.
If you are going to go the HAM route, make sure that all of your hardware is digital and encryption ready. The cheapest method is digital comms using a computer with 3rd party encryption software capable of AES 256 or better. There are plenty of apps out there that support encrypted real-time streaming audio and video over digital HAM interfaces.

Are there any solutions to send/receive email from a smartphone using a radio?

Radio to radio mesh-nets? That is a lot of work for little reward.

Side note: there is a book out about how to be a "marauder", and the benefits of being one, and the lack of strength in Rural positions...
(shrugs) Dunno, I figure if you get enough like-minded folks together, you can be okay.
