Hah, thats funny, I wanted to live in the sticks with acres and acres of land and my wife wanted a nice house on a 1/4 acre lot.

Congrats on making your dream a reality, I'm thinking of going half with my parents(assuming I can keep dad from turning it into a marijuana farm behind my back) on land around here in a few years assuming a good plot can be had, this has been a great thread.

Spent my youth up in the hollers of Keokee playing with my cousins.

Still go to the family graveyard, it's at a top of hill... every memorial day. We play rummy (I'm called "Cutthroat" by my aunts), tell lies, remember stories, and eat things I ain't supposed to be eatin'.

But one thing I will tell you. No one will ever fix biscuits as good as my grandma with flour, baking powder, baking soda, and lard... I swear to this day, I love The Woman... but I find a gal who makes grandma's biscuits? I may have a turmoil of love right there!

However, Back to the subject. I want to live in the hills. I want to be left alone, raise me some chickens, goats, a garden, with a few outbuildings for doing leather, metal, and wood crafting... Build what I need, grow/hunt/raise what I eat, and go to Wal-mart in town when I need something otherwise.

You know, I was always curious as growing grains, and such. I know moisture/rainfall can swamp them out, and ruin a field... but I don't know much past that... Any one else look into it?

Dried beans, and cornmeal maybe, but dang if I wouldn't have to trade for the small grains...

I think I could get corn to grow....wheat.... Now that's a whole other level of farming.

Oh, it grows easy enough. It's just the idea of handling gathering it in and threshing and drying and storing without today's modern equipment makes my mind go numb. Yup, I'll just stick with cornbread.

We got our Health Permit approved yesterday...Location of the drain field and well. Hoping to have the clearing completed by mid January . My wife is excited to get the garden area cleared ...I'm sure she already has it all laid out . She is really interested in a "Survival Garden" including dried beans and corn. We have had a lot of success with these before. I can't wait for the fresh tomatoes , peppers and cukes. We also like to grow sun flowers and jalapino peppers.
We have a friend that is a full time farmer, I'm sure he will help us a lot.

Palladin, I concur, that small grain makes me think HHHMMM, everyone get used to corn tortillas instead of wheat! I'm gonna look into oats, I cannot see that being hard.

The wife and I spent the day at out property burning brush and bush hogging. We have been working on our Pistol Range and our 80 yd. Rifle Range leaving the big and wide open areas for the Track Hoe and Loader. We are hoping to have them close to complete when the Excavation Contractor starts so he can make a few passes to get them to the final grade. I am also planning a longer range of about 175-200 yds.
We also did a little shooting with our 2 Sig's 1911 .22LR . We shot about 200 rds. The wife is getting "pretty damn good" saying what a difference it makes to be able to shoot 4-5 times a month. We are hoping to have both ranges complete by early Spring. Maybe if enough people are interested and willing to travel to Dinwiddie, we could have a VGOF meet and greet ...Some shooting , BSing , over night primitive camping ( for the tough guy's) Bon Fire and even a late Beer Drinking Contest....Who Knows ?

IIRC grains like sorghum and amaranth are much more water resistant than the thinner stalked grains.

Hey MBC, any thoughts on getting a HAM license?

I was actually thinking of getting mine. Our primary function as an OS in the CG is radio Comms so I figured it'd be a cool thing to get and set up a base at my house as a hobby.
