Heavy barrel mossin m-91. Anybody have input?

Post by kanata67 »

Stumbled across this at http://www.classicarms.us/firearms.htm and am very curious. I have wanted a ROMAK-3 for a while they were out of stock when I first ordered from classic so I got my first AR instead. They have ROMAK-3's back in stock but they no longer have the sweet style dragonov type stock + I'm broke. I like the idea of a 1000k 7.62x54 rifle though. Researching some random ammo given to me that turned out to be 7.62x51 I was informed it was canadian machine gun ammo and it would fire out of any 308 but any 308 ammo would not fire out of a machine gun as machine gun ammo is less powerful and the barrel might be damaged. When I came across this I had to wonder if one could make a better m-91.

"MOSIN NAGANT 7.62X54R HEAVY TARGET BARRELS!!!
LETS START AT THE BEGINNING....
Image
THESE ARE BRAND NEW REPLACEMENT BARRELS THAT WERE ORIGINALLY MANUFACTURED FOR THE
CZECH UK59 UNIVERSAL MACHINE GUN
CHAMBERED IN 7.62X54r.
Image
IMAGE ABOVE SHOWS STANDARD M91/30 BBL COMPARED TO THE UK-59 HEAVY BBL.

THEY WERE PURCHASED UNFIRED AS SURPLUS AND
RE-PROFILED AND THREADED TO FIT ALL VARIATION OF NAGANT RECEIVERS, i.e. M91/30, M44, M38...ETC.
ABOUT THE BARREL, OUR U.P.S. SCALE SHOWS THIS BBL WEIGHING IN AT AROUND 6.5 POUNDS. IT HAS THE BRIGHTEST, MOST PERFECT RIFLING I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. IT IS 24" IN TOTAL LENGTH AND HAS A 60 DEGREE RECESSED TARGET CROWN. EACH BARREL IS THREADED PROPERLY TO BE ACCEPTED BY ALL NAGANT RIFLE VARIATIONS CHAMBERED IN 7.62X54r.
NOW- LET US BE PERFECTLY CLEAR. THIS RE-BARRELING PROJECT IS NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART. STOCKS WOULD HAVE TO BE MODIFIED TO ACCEPT THIS HEAVY BARREL, AND ALTHOUGH RIFLES ARE THREADED PROPERLY, HEAD SPACING WOULD STILL HAVE TO BE DONE AND BARRELS WOULD HAVE TO BE TIMED PROPERLY INTO THE RECEIVER. NOT TO MENTION GETTING YOUR OLD BARREL OUT OF YOUR EXISTING RECEIVER....PLUS THERE ARE NO SITES SO FINISHED RIFLE WOULD NEED TO BE DRILLED AND TAPPED FOR A SCOPE AND MODIFIED TO A BENT BOLT. STILL THERE ARE NUMEROUS REPORTS ON THE INTERNET OF THE INCREDIBLE ACCURACY OF THESE CONVERSIONS, INCLUDING ONE WHERE A GUY IS
COVERING A 3 SHOT GROUP AT 200 YARDS WITH A QUARTER. PLUS THESE BARRELS ARE JUST TOTALLY
COOL."

Sounds cool so far but I am faint of heart, but then they added...

"This is like showers of blessings... A major importer saw our ad on the website for the heavy bbl's above. Well, it just so happens that they had a couple hundred stripped M91/30 receivers laying around from a project they did several years ago. They had just been sitting on them because lets just face it... without the barrels there was no real market. But if you had threaded barrels....... Eureka!!!!
They called us up and offered us the whole lot, and we jumped on those things faster than a chicken on a june bug. Barrels thread perfectly into these receivers with no modification what so ever. receivers are like new and will accept all componants from your existing rifle... and if the barrel is headspaced properly in the receiver any and all nagant bolts will interchange."

they also have Mosin Nagant Monte Carlo Stock's so I'd be looking at $170 for all the above including the stock. Check classics site for more details if you want but I think I posted enough for somebody to answer my questions...

What else would I need besides a bolt? Would I still need to sacrifice an existing m-91 for additional parts? I have a 1923 dragoon m-91 that I would not strip parts off so would I need to get a donor rifle? Would modding the montecarlo stock be required or would it be "plug and play"? Could such a rifle be modded to receive magazines cheaply and easily? Would such a rifle even come close to the performance of a ROMAK-3? Would such a rifle at least out perform a traditional m-91? Would it be worth the time and effort?
Any advice and/or input would be much appreciated.

cool info Jakeiscrazy though all were dead ends. The closest was Richard Nagy

but it is still not detachable.
Stripper clips are nice but a big ass scope is nicer.

seriously... no help or comments? Is everybody focused on the free AR? If so everybody should be answering my questions. I'm looking at either this project or the walther break action pellet gun as I will only have 10% of what I get for selling my toy collection on ebay as I'm still unemployed and the wife is more responsible than I am... as well as a better shot
pellet gun is usefull for attic rats and yard vermin as I have been told to not use incendiary rounds indoors against vermin in the ceiling/attic/power lines. 6.72xrz just seems nice as I don't have a pellet gun but I do have a M-91 and sharing ammo is always essential.
