Honestly for a first time AR I'd suggest a Spikes Tactical ST-15 M4. It's a 100% mil spec rifle that MSRPs for about $850. It's probably the best bang for the buck in the AR world. You can pay more for a worse gun but you cannot pay less for anything that even comes close.

get a newer 6920 and learn from every other manufactures...

cmv hp/mp chrome 1/7 barrel (4150), 158 steel (or better..) hp/mp bolt... seriously is NOT over rated. in fact its baseline for many folks... I shoot a 1/7 DD 16" barrel... LMT's "enhanced" (NICE) bolt and m16 carrier... Which is GTG on headspace and hp/mp+, properly staked...

6920's new can be had for a grand. look around. it's a colt. all you may want is an optic.. and a ton of mags and some CORRECT parts. keep it simple... less to break.

there is a "chart" floating around on the interwebs... search "m4 chart" on google... it compares most of the major brands. you can learn a lot...

I have a Stag Arms Model 4 upper on a DPMS lower. It is a great shooting rifle, very accurate with no malfunctions. My next one will more then likely be a Stag carbine. I am a very happy customer.
