Purchasing firearms with an out-of-date address

Hello all--I just moved back to the area after a year overseas. I kept VA as my home state (i.e. have continued to pay state taxes), but am no longer at the address listed on my DL and passport. I plan on staying at a friend's place for a while before moving to a new long-term residence and updating my address info.

So my question: can I purchase a firearm using proof of VA residency (specifically my DL and passport) with an out-of-date address, given that I am legally a VA resident?

You need a primary ID and secondary ID with the same address in Virginia.

I assume the ID's are not expired, the 'out of date' part is that they no longer represent your current place of residence?

VA State police indicate that:

A military photo-identification card issued by the United States Department of Defense and proof that Virginia is the permanent duty station via "signed and current" military assignment orders is acceptable identification and residency documentation to establish military personnel as residents of Virginia.

So if you are military this might help you.

Not military, so no mil orders available. My DL is still valid, and I would use a current bank check as my second form of ID, per the permissible forms listed on the state police site (http://www.vsp.state.va.us/Firearms_VFTP.shtm -- I realized only after my first post that passports don't list addresses).

Both the license and check are current and valid and list the same address, just an address where I'm not residing (but can still pick up mail, and still have things in storage). Sound OK to you all?

I've only ever had clerks ask me for ID, they've never asked if I live at the addresses on the ID's I've handed them.

But if you want to know for sure, call the VASP in the morning.

The two addresses on the IDs should match.
The DMV can print out a change of address without issuing a new DL. At least they used to.
This worked for me in the past after I changed addresses.

You need to go to the DMV and get the aforementioned "Change of Address" card. That card, plus your not-expired-but-old-address ID, and a second document with your name and CURRENT ADDRESS should suffice.

If you try using your old address and second ID with the old address, you're either lying about where you live on the Federal form, OR your IDs don't match what you put down as your current address in the Federal form, and either way you're gonna have problems.
