Best place to get a Garand?

Post by newdovo »

I've been contemplating getting an M1 Garand. Is the CMP the best/least expensive way to go? I do fulfill the requirements to buy from them. The Garands I see for sale on the auction sites seem a little more pricey. Haven't looked at gun shows, but how do prices look there?

The CMP will have the best deal. If you belong to a member organization, then go for it.

VCDL and NRA are both member organizations for CMP.

Check here for Garand details: http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/rifles.htm

And here are the order forms: http://www.odcmp.com/Sales/formsindex.htm

I found a good man that rebuilds Garands. He charges just a little more then the CMP select grade and his workmanship thus far is excellent. His web address is M1garand.com. I purchased the select grade, and with just a little refinement on my end, the gun shoots just under 2" at 100 yards. For being "off the rack" John Garand match acceptable, it will be hard to beat. Also, my particular receiver is SA 996xxx, which is of excellent condition for being manufactured in Sept 42'.

No - just kinda assumed on that part. Knew VCDL was listed - then went to look at the list like you did and I saw NRA wasn't there... curious.

aren't there 800,000 garands in korea waiting to get shipped back to the us if some law gets passed or failed? I know they used to be relatively cheap at cmp years ago but at $800+ now-a-days I can't justify it. My all matching #s including bayonet dragoon M91 was less than $150 shipped and taxed. I want a garand but I'm hoping the market floods and the price drops... or a friend overseas "trips" over one and send me the parts cheap.

NRA has been disassociated with CMP since before there was a CMP. Ted Kennedy got wind of the DCM and how NRA members were getting rifles and pistols shipped to their homes, and got NRA removed from the list of associated orgs. That carried over when CMP was created from the ashes of DCM.

From what I understand our oh so great president signed a law making it illegal to return them to the US. But yes their is almost a million of them over there just waiting to come back.
