Which gun to silence.

Post by sbgaballa »

So Im going to buy a threaded barrel from Storm Lake.

I just dont know if I want to have my Full size M&P40 with a silencer, or my M&P45compact with a silencer.

Any thoughts?

Full sized guns will function better and more reliably than compacts. Also, if you get a .45 silencer, it will work on the .40 as well (Both the AAC TiRANT and Silencer Co Osprey 45 have pistons for .45, .40 and 9mm)
So, if I were you, I'd at least start out with a .45 silencer and silence the full sized .40 and any 9mm silencers. I'd probably not silence the .45 compact because I'd be more likely carrying it all the time and swapping in and out barrels, etc. would be a pain. I'd more than likely just save up and get another .45 to suppress instead (and did. I silenced my Glock 17, but carry my Glock 19 and don't bother with a threaded barrel for that one)

Don't forget that you really want to shoot subsonic ammo to keep the noise down. I'll second the full size is better, but IMO .45s about ideal for a suppressed handgun.

You don't have to go looking for special subsonic ammo though. Stick with heavy bullets for the caliber (220 gr .45 ACP, 180 gr .40 S&W and 147 gr 9mm) in factory standard pressure defensive ammo and you'll stay subsonic so long as the temperature is not well below freezing.

True. I didn't mean to imply otherwise.

I'd suppress the .40 personally. Heavy for caliber and you'll be subsonic, as Chasbo00 mentioned.
