Old Ruger Super Blackhawk

Post by M1A4ME »

Went home this weekend and picked up some of my stuff to bring back. I hadn't even laid eyes on them for the last 25 or 26 years (since I moved to VA from WV). A couple of .22's (Win. M60 and a Browning - the model that loads through the stock and ejects out the bottom), my father-in-laws Rem. 742 in 30.06, my very first centerfire rifle (sporterized Winchester M1917) and my father-in-laws Ruger SBH.

I pulled them from the cases and they looked like the day I put them away but I wiped them down again with an oily rag. The Ruger had some issues (not looks, but operability). It would cock if held muzzle up, sideways or muzzle down but the hammer would hang part of the way back if held level when trying to cock it (can't have that).

I tore it apart (never had one apart before) and it was of course dirty and oily but there was no rust inside. I swabbed/scraped/wiped out the old oil and powder residue, re-oiled it (good old 3n1 oil) and put it back together and it works fine now. I didn't find anything obvious (nothing broken) other than the gooey mix of old oil and powder residue. It was shot a lot prior to getting put away and never disassembled (other than removing the cylinder, cleaning it and the barrel and wiping off the outside surfaces) for cleaning until Saturday night.

Man I really love taking guns apart to see what makes them tick and then putting them back together again.

I'm with ya, it's great to tinker with them, until one of them little Geezus springs takes flight into another dimension, or down the register behind the kitchen table...
Congrats on your reunion with old pals. :clapping:

It's like seeing old friends again, isn't it. I like discovering what makes them tick, too. A well designed firearm is a thing of beauty!

You know what's great?

Getting out a gun you haven't fiddled with for about a coon's age, and still having the muscle memory to strip it without going to the internet. Yeah, hate the "MYSTERY FLYING SPRING!" events.

As my girlfriend once said "You don't cheat with other women, but If I ever said 'It's the guns, or me', I know I'd be packing."
