i went there last weekend, i walk in start talking to the fella's filling out paperwork since i never been there, and one of the guys starts filling up a basket with ammo. i'm like wtf is that for? he says you cant use your own ammo here....i'm like WTF?? he said it was for insurance reasons, i said nah dood thats stupid, i already have my own ammo. so i didnt use their range. are all ranges out there like that?

I've heard that one before and I've worked in indoor ranges. The other one you commonly hear is they don't want you to use reloads because they are "too powerful" for the wall/trap. Oh also steel core is armor pearcing and will penetrate the wall. If steel core is a concern for some reason - put a magnet to it.

Really, it's just another way to make profit with decent margin ammo sales.

Now for the other side of it... it's called capitalism and it's private property. They can set the price and rules as they see fit. And you can decide to not participate - as I have decided not to.

i understand the capitalism part, but thign is, around where i'm from, they dont make you use their ammo, you can use whatever you bring. now it would be something different if i didnt have like thousands of rounds of ammo already.

From what I understand, Shooter's Paradise in Woodbridge burned down due to someone shooting tracer's. If that is the case, I'd make people use my ammo too.

Yep, it is kinda of a safety thing and it's also a profit thing. If you want to bring your own ammo you can go to the Fort Lee POW range but they charge more and the charge by the hour. Dominion's range fee is pretty cheap at $8 for the whole day. So take you pick.

When that range first opened they had memberships. I think it cost $150.00 per year and you could shoot your ammo. A group of Bullseye shooters would go there a couple nights a week during the winter to practice for the spring and summer matchs.
When the range banned the shooters own match ammo, the Bullseye shooters left.
The Bullseye guys bought gear, guns, ammo, reloading components and some firearms.
Plus they were a readily available help for novices and served as observers for unsafe range behavour. All that walked out the door, never to return.

If you're looking for an indoor range, The Smoking Gun, on the Boulevard in Colonial Heights, almost to Petersburg, will allow you to bring your own ammo. If I recall correctly, it's $10 if you buy their ammo and $20 if you bring your own. Yeah, they're gonna make their buck, too. The range is 15 or 20 yards.
I've been there a few times. If I'm going to shoot several guns, or if I plan on shooting a lot, I bring my own ammo. If I just want to put a box of 50 through my CC gun for a quick practice, I'll buy their ammo. I'll ask if I can also shoot a cylinder full of SD ammo that I've brought with me while I'm there, and they've been cool with that.

From what I can tell, Dominion still offers memberships. They also have various offers and price breaks throughout the week. No range fee if you have a CCW on Thursday works for me. None of which allow you to bring your own ammo though. Seems like your kinda stuck if you want to shoot. Drive more than 30-45 minutes one way and pay a fee with fuel $3.00 a gallon. Not to mention the time to and from, along with the fee you most likely pay @ the gun show (I'm assuming your getting reloads there). Or just pony up at Dominion. I think I'll just shoot less and shoot smaller caliber ammo.

But hey, its all about choices right? My two cents......

Most places let you shoot your own ammo IF you join, but not the case for Dominion, but joining does get rid of the range fee (minus the membership of course) and you get 15% off ammo.

Yep, I've never been to a range that won't let you use their own ammo, but I know there are ones out there. There are lots that will let you shoot your own ammo.

Unfortunately not to many out towards my way The new one in Richmond's west end looks promising though.

I have been considering changing my defensive ammo, but since right now I have no where convenient to shoot it I haven't gone through with it. Gotta test it out to see how my gun likes it first, don't want to have a FTF when my life is on the line. The friend's place I used to go to has since moved.

I bet Dominion wouldn't mind you trying out a little defensive ammo as they don't carry it. Maybe just let them check over it first so they can may sure it won't mess up their backstop and buy a little target ammo to shoot while your at it.

I didn't realize that many ranges in the Richmond area were like that. That's not good to hear.

I'm familiar with a range near Myrtle Beach that also does not allow steel jackets, but charges $2 per box for your own ammo (if it passes the magnet check).

That encourages folks to show up and generate range fees, ammo (who shoots one box?), and other purchases - targets, cleaning gear, new toys.

$2 on a box of ammo (~$25/8 %) doesn't sound like much but is a return on something they didn't even have to put up any stocking costs for.

I THOUGHT the same thing, Over $500 a year for the crappy membership, their ammo, and can only bring a friend once a year? Screw that.

I doubt I even visit. I was really excited to $20 and hour is REALLY costly compared to Dominions $8 for the day. Sometimes when I go to the range I'll be there for 2 hours or more. The "tactical" Range could change my opinion on that though. I want to know more about what you can do there. What's allow and how do you do it if other shooters are there, maybe time slots?

I don't think you can compare what they are going to offer to any range around here...maybe Scottsdale...
