iPad Review

Post by Bernie »

I broke down in August and bought an iPad.

A couple of weeks ago my Mother had surgery to get a vein in her neck roto rooted. I sat out there in the waiting room for hours, with my iPad. Ten hour battery life and hospital wifi. I could slouch and cross this leg. I could slouch and cross that leg. I could slouch and stretch both legs. Get the picture. The laptop people could only sit. I know having been one.

I really foam at the mouth at the idea of a new lap top as mine is 11 years old and still ticking for anything I need a laptop for. It too, is an Apple, Pismo for those of you familiar with the line. My point being that for my geeky lifestyle, an iPad is all I need or want for on the go.

I take it to work daily. I am an industrial electrician and have it full of Allen Bradley (and others) manuals in PDF form that have been dog eared to the pages I need most. I open spread sheets that are done in Excel to find passwords for the different equipment in the different areas. Yes I still have to use a company PeeCee to download and edit programs.

I take my iPhone, Sig and iPad almost everywhere.

If you own a laptop you know it is a lot like a baby. That cute bundle of joy is Sooooooo small. But you need a minivan to take all the stuff to support it. Got a laptop bag? Of course you do! Much like a baby it is full of stuff to support your laptop.

I take my iPhone, Sig and iPad almost everywhere. No bag.

How is the web browsing? Same as a normal laptop or do you have trouble loading pages sometimes?

Glad you asked. It does not do Flash. U-Tube has most of its stuff it both formats and the only thing you will miss is the trashy adds. I have an application on my computer called Click to Flash. I get a grey box that says "Flash" above this post and when I click on it I get a CHEVY ad. I really did not need that. On a computer you have the option. On an iPad, no option, no flash.

The VGOF site looks very different but Amazon looks the same. I think some forums are set up to display different pages to mobile devices. Oath Keepers forum looks like the web page on the computer.

Ya, Rick enabled a mobile version a while back. I really like TapaTalk for mobile forum browsing.

The new models should be announced on March 2nd. I do not expect big changes, rumors are thinner, lighter, faster for sure. Probably front camera for video chat, maybe back camera. Might have the new Thunderbolt port that was introduced on the new Macbook Pros last week. After some rumors that appear to be false, most are expecting the iPad retina display to be at least one more version away.

Thunderbolt is basically Intel's "Light Peak" technology over copper. We don't know what the specs for thermal and power (AFAIK) are yet, but the pictures of the IC I have seen would likely make it not fit well (power/size) into an iPad like device. Not yet at least.

Alright I got to play with one in a Verizon and was pretty impressed. The Youtube app worked well for me but it seemed to have some buffering issue. That could have just been a slow connection. I didn't play with the browser much.

The display on the Motorola XOOM is pretty amazing too. It's a shame that the price is so much higher than the iPad.

Maybe the subsidized price will come down if sales are good. I'd rather hold out and see what the Android market can offer.

Don't forget that this market is really just getting started. Early adopters always pay a higher price.
