Silly question, but where CAN you legally carry...

Post by cheepz »

Sorry, I may just have a skewed outlook since I am a student. So since all I do is mostly go to school, I know I cannot concealed carry 90% of the places I go on a daily basis. However, I just wanted to ask to see where most people do carry concealed. I am also concerned that I will concealed carry accidentally into a place that prohibits firearms. I have heard that many malls and stores do not allow firearms, but I have NEVER seen the signs which makes me worried as I do not want to break any laws in the future. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated :D

In the left frame, towards the top of this page is a link to "Virginia CHP Info" I have included the link and relevant parts of it here:

http://vagunforum.net/carrying/conceale ... s-t16.html
Where Unlawful to Carry

§18.2-308 (J.3.): No person shall carry a concealed handgun onto the premises of any restaurant or club as defined in § 4.1-100 for which a license to sell and serve alcoholic beverages for on-premises consumption has been granted by the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Board under Title 4.1 of the Code of Virginia, nothing herein shall prohibit any sworn law-enforcement officer from carrying a concealed handgun on the premises of such restaurant or club or any owner or event sponsor or his employees from carrying a concealed handgun while on duty at such restaurant or club if such person has a concealed handgun permit.

§18.2-308 (O.): Private property when prohibited by the owner of the property, or where posted as prohibited.

§18.2-283: To a place of worship while a meeting for religious purposes is being held at such place, without good and sufficient reason.

§18.2-283.1: Courthouse.

§18.2-308.1: School property. Exemptions to this statute include a person who has a valid concealed handgun permit and possesses a concealed handgun while in a motor vehicle in a parking lot, traffic circle, or other means of vehicular ingress or egress to the school.

§18.2-287.01: Carrying weapon in air carrier airport terminal.
I hope this helps.

http://www.handgunlaw.us/states/virginia.pdf is probably the best link for accurate and especially current info. Many other online sources do not stay current and often contain outdated and incorrect information.

Ah, all great info. But let me ask you, where do you usually carry concealed? Please feel free to give as many specific instances (Ex. to Walmart?). And even if you cant carry concealed into a place that serves alcohol, isnt it legal to open carry it in Va in such places?

You cannot carry anywhere on postal property, including the parking lot.

To better clarify, you cannot carry on Federal property which includes the post office...

Okay, but if I'm following it correctly, I can't even have the gun in a locked case in the post office parking lot. So I have to make special plans for a post office trip.

Correct.

Park on the public roadway, find postal services elsewhere, or don't bring a gun.

I dont think anyone is going to honestly give you crap if you have a weapon locked in your car where no one but you know or can see it, while at the PO parking lot.

You're right; no one is likely to find you out. That goes for many prohibited places. Deciding to disregard a law that you find inconvenient is a personal choice. But know that there are consequences for breaking the law if you are found out.
