New Shotguns - Suggestions

Post by OleMan »

I'm planning on buying one or two new shotguns in the next year to two - 12 or 20 Ga. I would appreciate any experience, or reviews on pump or semi-auto shotguns. I'll want to use the shotgun for any and all types of hunting so a multi-choke gun would be ideal.

I have a similary topic on rifles in the Rifles forum.

Thanks.

I've got three shotguns, a semi-auto, a pump, and a double. If you are looking for an all-purpose shotgun, a Mossberg 500 or a Remington 870 would work. Either can be purchased with a barrel tapped for chokes. I'd get a combo gun that came with a longer bird barrel and a rifled slug barrel to get the best of both worlds.

That is the idea - pump with two barrels. From years ago I thought they were hard to find, but it appears Mossberg and Remington have just that. I've been hearing that Mossberg is the shotgun of choice for the military and a lot of LE because of relaibility.

Thanks, that is really helpful.

I just bought 3 Browning Silvers in 12-guage. They take the 3.5" magnum shell. This was important to me because you need 3.5" shells for waterfowl. I liked the Silvers because they have the famous "Browning hump" - just like the A-500 (which didn't come in 3.5" - at least when I bought mine) and the venerable Auto-5.

Back in the day before evrything came with multi-chokes, a man who hunted everything that had two sons needed between 9 and 12 shotguns just to be fully equiped. And you had to stay up with developments, too, as new stuff came out. So I've accumulated 21 shotguns over the years, from .410 to 10 guage, and including Remington, Browning, Ruger, Benelli, Baretta, Mossberg, Winchester, Stephens and Savage. We've hunted squirrels, rabbits, grouse, quail, pheasant, woodcock, ducks, geese and deer. For my money, you can't beat a Browning autoloader - IF it's got a hump.
