So, I gotta ask..... Egypt?

Post by davasmith »

1. Are we getting a taste of what it takes to overthrow a dictatorship? I'm not sure, but if we are wise and pay attention we most definitely will get a glimpse as to how our gov. would react if "we the people" got pissed off enough in this country.
2. How long before we are sent over to Egypt to help them help themselves?
3. Do you know anyone who would volunteer for the occasion?
4. Why do we give Egypt 3 billion dollars a year to be our ally? What as countries do we have in common?

OH YEAH, OIL.

Unfortunately the domino effect is in motion despite all what the so called experts are not predicting. And to answer your question why we give Egypt, 3 billions is to keep the Suez canal open for our ships to go throuh. And by the way, they still charge us (by weight and length) everytime one of our ships transits through. Oh yes that sweet crude so much needed!

Lets all buy hybrids! Suez canal, what a sweet "crude" deal. Pay for entry, use and to maintain. Thanks for the info, Josh

....you could find your answers by "searching" the Shaw of Iran. Jimmy Carter turned his back on the Shaw. If obama is as much like Jimmy as we expect, he will do the same, with the same results.

Heh...I wouldn't mind "volunteering" in Egypt, but I don't think I'd be on the same side as our government. We've been buddying up to the old regime too much and for too long. Now the people are revolting and trying to overthrow it in the name of instituting a democracy (which we're always preaching around the globe) and we can't support the people or we have to admit we were wrong which of course is never an option. I think we look like self serving a-holes now that don't practice what they preach unless it benefits us. Anyways, I support the rioters. I love to see the people joining together and rising up against an oppressive government. That and I've always had a lust for Molotovs

I support anyone who wants to live their life the way they want, regardless of the character of the regime they currently live under.

Democracy is dangerous. I hope the people of Egypt figure that out before they install a new government on that particular model.

Although raising up against oppressive governments is good, it can be really bad if the replacement government is worse. The Russian Czar was over turned by socialists, but the communist took advantage of the turmoil to seize power and resulted in the death and enslavement of many many more people than the old government would have not to mention the deaths in WWII. The Shah of Iran was a despot, but his over throw resulted in the death and enslavement of many more people than the old regime including many deaths in the Iraq-Iran war. Iraq officially attacked Iran first in that war but it is was to stop Iran from fomenting rebellion among the Shiites is Iraq.

The big warning sign to me in Egypt is the fact that the major rioting started after Friday prayers. The religious leaders are in-support of this, maybe for good reasons, but maybe to install a religious dictatorship. It is probably too late to anything now anyway, hopefully the new government will remain secular and establish a more free and open country.

If the Muslim Brotherhood wins its fight to install a Islamic State the losers will be Women, and religious minorities of all types, especially the Copts.

Howdy, Y'all,

At the risk of sounding unpatriotic, my armchair analysis: "Egypt" is a predictable result of accepting cash from Uncle Sam in return for supporting our political agenda de jour.

Sadat got sucked into our meddling "peace process", but, as they say, "the road to hell is paved with good intentions". After the initial uproar, Sadat and his new BFF Begin got their peace prize, and Carter got his "legacy". With the biggest player on the sidelines, things kinda-sorta settled down as long as the money kept flowing.

Fast-forward thirty years. Sadat's successor is getting long in the tooth, the economy is in global melt down, and a bumper crop of PO'd Muslims is under the leadership of the next generation of radical extremists. The cost of "peace" is rising exponentially, but Uncle Sam is under new management, and the wherewithal to keep the peace just ain't there any more.

"Egypt" may be nothing more than a hiccup, but my gut tells me that if it's not Act I of the next tragedy, it certainly is the prologue.

Regards,

George

Hey, George: you are not the only one in world running the "what next" scenario through your head.

And it does not make you "unpatriotic". If anything, it makes you more patriotic because maybe, just maybe, you're thinking about what you may need to do when (not "if", my friends, "when") the SHTF here.

God, family, self. Government is an institution of those who believe it is someone else's responsibility to tell them what to do.

The rule of law was meant to restrict and inhibit government. Government has learned to subvert the civil authority in this country (beginning with Executive Order) and has ignored the will of the people for far too long.

I would consider you unpatriotic if you DIDN'T ponder your role in the coming apocalypse.

I just don't want to be mistaken for one of those "blame America" types. But wrong is wrong, ignorance, greed and vanity notwithstanding.

......this is as much about the devaluation of the dollar as anything else. This is a food riot. An unemployment riot, and lastly a democratic one. Someone said they were taken back by the fact that the majority of the unrest didn't start until after Friday Prayers...thats a very , VERY important piece of this puzzle. Sadat was killed because he signed a peace treaty with Isreal. He was killed by the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood is like 10% of the Egyptian government, and a major sponser of this revolt. If and when Mubarack falls, they will swoop in and pick up the pieces, and they will be just as, if n ot more brutal than he ever was.

Egypt is about the only Arab country that makes overtures of being somewhat supportive of Israel...at least they dont make open overtures about being anti. Not that I agree with any foreign aid. I think it should all be cut out as well as all foreign military sales. If things are so bad that congress is cutting domestic programs how in the world can we justify giving one penny to a foreign country for any reason.

Nope you are not the only one around here that feels that way. There are plenty of us that would rather see that money not spent on foriegners or for that matter NOT SPENT at all. it may sound like a drop in the bucket but it is money we currently don't have. If we stop I am sure that the world will not end, and I am pretty sure that some other country will step up to the plate and put money out there for the infulance.

Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, as well as Egypt. We need to turn the entire area into one big glass factory and be done with it! :raghead:

Disagree bro. Use a bunch of them neutron bombs. Kill em all for God to sort out but leave us the infrastructure (such as it is) and easy access to all that oil...they got some nice beaches over there too...
