Long story short a friend gave me 7 silver 308 bullets. As I don't have a 308 rifle it would be me, a sliver bullet, a hammer, and a really pissed off werewolf  .

I have a 30.06 and a 223 ar, both scoped. While both are accurate I don't have what I would consider a good sniping gun so...
which is better, a bolt action type 308 like the m700 or a ar style like the DPMS panther?
does there exist a bolt action with removable magazines rather than internal? If not do any bolt action rifles utilize stripper clips? Forgive my ignorance please.

With the price of silver nearing $30/oz those are some expensive bullets!

A bolt is preferred and yes, there are lots of guns with detachable mags. Building a long range rig can get expensive real fast, but it doesn't have to be if you are on a budget. There are some low cost and even factory guns that can shoot 1k well. Training is far more important than how much your gun costs. If you can't read the wind or estimate distance it doesn't matter how much you spend you're going to miss. However, if you have the funds and want a nice gun I don't see a problem with buying nice toys and training with them...just don't think that nice toys make you good.

30-06 is a good long range caliber, what is your rifle? Also, what is long range to you? 500 yards, 1000 yards, 2000 yards, etc? 1k can be done on a budget pretty easily, but none of it is cheap.

Sounds like somebody gave you some old Winchester Silvertips. I think I have some for a .30-30 around here somewhere. I wouldn't go buying a rifle for those seven bullets, unless you have a werewolf problem. The .30-06 you have is very similar in capacity (slightly higher velocity) and has a greater selection of ammo available. As far as accuracy, there are plenty of rifles out there that have great potential from the factory. If you read about MOA, it stands for Minute Of Angle (basically 1 inch per 100 yards). If you are looking at a rifle capable of 3 MOA, it will shoot a 3 inch group at 100 yards, 6 inch at 200 and so on. As gunderwood touched on estimating range, reading the wind are two skills that you must master to shoot at longer ranges accurately. One thing he didn't touch on was optics. A $1000 rifle isn't going to reach it's potential with a $59 scope. In some cases the cost of the scope matches or exceeds the cost of the rifle.
You just have to ask yourself, is he telling you the truth based on knowledge and experience or spreading internet myths?

Tell me about it! The last scope I bought was a Aimpoint T1, but the one before that was a S&B PMII 5-25x56mm which is $3k+.

She shoots too, although she has not much interest in my long range shooting. Truth be told, the scope was cheaper than the rifle or suppressor. I put it on one of these: http://www.deserttacticalarms.com/ with several quick changes and accessories and one of these suppressors: http://www.advanced-armament.com/product.aspx?pid=485.

I've sold off a lot of my common guns at this point and now focus on high end firearms of which I don't have many for obvious reasons.

You don't have to buy a 1k+ piece of glass to reach out. I've got a sub $300 Millett on my Remington 700 and I shoot out to 800+ no problem.

As it's been said above, a lot has to do with what you want to do with the rifle. Shooting under 700 and you want fast string of fire then go with an AR platform. Want to really reach out and touch someone go with a bolt gun. The options for bolt guns with detachable mags is pretty much unlimited. There are lots and lots of after-market stocks out there. There are even companies that make detachable mags for your stock with some modification.

No you don't, but I've got that glass on a .338LM which is capable of 2000+ yards. I've shot out to 1650 yards before running out of mountain...I still need a lot of practice past 1000k. The big money scopes aren't just about glass. Repeatability of the turrets is a big part of the expense. The ability to dial in your dope and have it be correct regardless if it is 100F or well below zero is not trivial.

Yes, out to 700 yards or so an accurate AR10 or M1A is a great option. Certainly you can push them further though. I watched some guys hit 1400 yards with a M1A and irons, but it did take a few shots to get on target and most importantly a really good spotter.

ok... finally settled after coming home from pa for x-mas. Bonus dad said "I suggest a scoped Remington 700 in 308 or other readily available cal" and I tend to listen to a man who has a collection worth more than my house. I currently have a lead on a scoped 29" heavy barrel 223 with a sweet 1/2lb trigger that still won't shoot my silver but at less than 1/2 the price of the scope on itI just can't say no. I just love that trigger let off.

OK... now that I pulled it out of my closet and looked at it, the 30.06 is a savage model 110 E CAL 30.06 SPRG or model "scratch+10" E CAL 30.06 SPRG. It came free with a used washing machine... or the other way around if the wife is not in hearing distance. It's an internal magazine and I have yet to fire it after well over a year. I just cleaned it, cased it, and stuck it in the closet. It has a red dot BARSKA scope of impressive distance that I know little about. 12 dot settings from off to real bright, and 12x rotary zoom. I assume 12x as it's numbered 1-12. The ex-marine tunnel rat I got it from said he sighted it at 1200 for the hand loads he used. Do I need to down sight it as hand-loading is beyond my abilities at the moment and the loads he described scared me just hearing about them.
as for me I figure 800yards should be more than ample in the flat ass no line of sight state of FL where I live. Again not that farther would be a bad thing. Farthest I have hit a 5" ring is 1000 yards using somebody elses gun at a range. Sweet gun suffice to say when a newbee like me can shoot like that. I was looking at the ROMAK-3 at classic arms last year as it used the same rounds as my m91 which seemed a good idea as universal ammo is always good, but they were out of stock and I got my ar instead. With the rails and accessories I think I lucked out that I had to go ar instead of the romak and I won't look back'.
Again... none of this helps against werewolves so...
what gauge shot gun should be used for hand loads of half-rolls of silver dimes
I assume breach loader non-fluted barrel but have never made dime loads myself.

and no... no werewolf problem of note but as a boyscout I believe in being prepared. Why else have a harpoon?

Trust me as a newby with long range shooting that can shoot into 1/2'' MOA with a weapon out at 1,000 yards you don't need any help. Hell even I would not shoot against you.
P.S. there is no such thing as a former Marine.
