Why I have AR15's
Why I have AR15's
One day while walking through one of the Richmond, VA gunshows I saw a "cool" looking AR15 I always thought I'd wanted. A CAR15. That's the little short rifle with the collapsable buttstock, the 11" (or so barrel) with a 5" (or so) long flash suppressor to make the overal barrel+flash suppressor meet the legal minimum rifle barrel length. At the time I really didn't care how it shot because I'm a .30 caliber guy.
Anyway, I took it home (WV home) the next time I visited the folks and at 25 yds. it shot little tiny groups. Off hand we were standing around making golf balls disappear. I bought a .22 conversion kit for it and that little sucker would shoot a dime sized 10 shot group from the prone position with Remington Golden Bullets. Man, I was some kind of excited. If I was still squirrel hunting it would have been a neat little squirrel rifle.
Anyway, based on that experience I built a vARmint rifle (24" SS heavy barrel AR15) with free float tube and bipod and big scope. I had some issues with it at first but a combination of some troubleshooting, working on the upper and a change in reloads (H335 powder vs. IMR4895) resulted in pencil eraser sized 25 meter groups from prone position.
Other AR15's followed, as well as another .22 conversion kit for my son (for his AR15 of course). My latest (and last - and I really mean it....) has some special features I wanted to try out (bolt/carrier coating, lightweight barrel, railed free float tube, etc. Haven't got to shoot it yet, too much other stuff going on.
How about you?

1. Because I have a right to own them....
2. Because they're just plain cool
3. Because there are so many add ons for them...
4. Did I mention how cool they are?
I only have the one right now, but I'm sure there will be more. I know I want one in .308.

I LOVE MY AR. I can go cheap on accessories or hella expensice and they all work fine. What other rifle can you build for $450???? You can drop in mud and it still fires. You want it gold plated? No problemo!!!

I love mine because it loves me back. Uncle Sam taught me how to shoot the M16 and the AR is damn close. When the SHTF it's gonna be nice to have around. With the push of two pivot pins I can change uppers and put on virtually any damn caliber I want. It just plain kicks ass.

Be particular, and be vigilant, as the enemy will only attack on two occasions:
When you're ready or when you're not ready.
Also never forget, that everyone who shows up, is not necessarily there to help.

Re: Why I have AR15's
this is the last one I built. Parts from all over, BCM for the bolt/carrier and upper receiver, lower is from Spike's Tactical, butt stock from CAA, free float tube from Yankee Hill Machine, barrel from (darn, I forgot who I ordered the barrel from and it was one of the hardest parts to find because its a light weight profile, chrome lined, mid-length gas port barrel). Oh well, I like those old Trilux SUIT sights so I put one on it.

Re: Why I have AR15's
I wanted a handy hunting carbine to match with my Rem 700. I couldn't find a Mini-14 in 6.8 to save my life, so I built a lower and bought a 6.8 M4 style upper. And things ran downhill from there. Built another lower and installed a 6.8 SPR upper for mid-range competitions. Then I built another lower and a CMMG M4 upper for 3-Gun. I'm bought another lower, but I'm selling it to build an AR-10 for long range competitions. It's crazy. But all three of my current ARs are very accurate and work well, although cleaning the BCG is a pain.

Re: Why I have AR15's
Kaosdad, can I see the build specs for the $450 AR? Is there a good "one stop shop" site with all AR parts for sale? I couldn't build a 10/22 for half that. If an AR can be built for under $500, I don't know why I haven't started yet!

The number one reason to own an AR is it pisses most liberals off!

Re: Why I have AR15's
I bought mine as after I bought my first handgun, I got the bug. Everyone said, "You shot longarms way back when, buy an AR, you'll love it."
So I went all geeky and bought a piston-powered Ruger SR-556. I have to say the sound of the BCG make me moist.

You'll start a flame work with the AK guys over that one!VBshooter wrote:I just plain like em..can be used for any purpose,,drop it in the dirt and it still works... I once knew a guy who had a cousin, who's brother's mother's friend sneezed on his AR15 and it never worked again! Now his AK was thrown in a river and used as a bridge while a 10 tank divisions drove over it and it shoots everything you put in it...including 50BMG!

But that said, any true gun afficionado knows Mosin-Nagants are better. Why? 'Cause that's what I've got and I said so!
